Royal Air Force Promotions Announced

LONDON, Dec. 5. The Air Ministry announces a considerable number of Royal Air Force promotions from the rank of flightlieutenant to squadron-leader (General Duties Branch). Included are the following New Zealanders: M. F. Calder (Christchurch), R. Faville (Hamilton), G. T. Jarmon (Wellington), Barry S. Nicholl (Masterton), L. S. Lamb (Masterton), Alfred H. Marsack and Dudley H. Marsack (Remuera), R. C. Richmond Wellington) and G. L. Menzies. Mr. Menzies was the first, in 1931, to make a solo flight in a light aeroplane across the Tasman between Australia and New Zealand. He joined the Royal Air Force in 1932. Besides tapping a supply of pure water for the Normanby township of 1000 gallons an hour, a well bored within the Town Board district has disclosed (reports the Taranaki correspondent of the Evening Post) that the land surface in the vicinity was once 105 feet lower than it is now. Two distinct former land surfaces were discovered, the first 40 feet down and the second 105 feet. At each level there was a buried forest, and much mixed volcanic rock, scoria and pumice. There was also evidence of two eruptions. The timber is remarkably well preserved, the texture being rough and stringy, without any signs of decay.
