The Spanish Embassy, in acknowledging British help and sympathy in connection with the sinking of the Spanish merchantman Cantabria by the armed Franco auxiliary Nadir off the coast of Norfolk, declares that the attack was a clear case of piracy and contrary to all principles of international law, no warship being authorised to sink a merchantman without ensuring the safety of the crew. “Such a dastardly attack,’’ says the Embassy, “merits general condemnation.” “The Nadir was illegally armed at Hamburg, from where she was sailing to a rebel port. Many rebel vessels have been similarly transformed at German ports.” FRANCO REACHES EBRO REPUBLICAN RETREAT ACROSS RIVER SARAGOSSA, Nov. 4. The Nationalist right wing is reported to have reached the banks of the Ebro River in tho neighbourhood of Pinell, four mies south-eastward from Gandesa. Tho Hendayo correspondent of The Times says that the Republicans must make a precarious crossing of the river under steady shellfire, in addition to heavy bombardment from the air. Employing numerous tanks, the Nationalists havo steadily increased their gains on tho Ebro front, securing eight miles of road from Pinell to Morado Ebro. The Republicans are attempting to make a stand at Morande Ebro in order to permit retreat across the river. A hurricane of bombs and shells had previously precluded organised resistance. FRANCO CLAIMS SUCCESSES FRENCH ALLEGE CRUELTY TO BASQUE PRISONERS Received Sunday, 7.5 p.m. SARAGOSSA, Nov. 5. After a week of bitter fighting and tho drive of the Republicans across the Ebro, General Franco’s forces claim to have captured two bridgeheads and inflicted heavy casualties. They took 6000 Republican prisoners in five days. They are now pinned close to a river. The Republicans, on the other hand, claim they have fallen back according to plan and without loss. A Paris message says that the Basque Government accuses General Franco of continuing the execution of Basque prisoners. Unparalleled cruelty allegedly marks their treatment in gaols and labour camps, many dying as a result of it. Three hundred women political prisoners were crowded into .colls intended to accommodate 100.
