Visiting Young Farmers Happily Entertained
DANCING A PLEASANT RELAXATION As a fitting wind-up to Saturday's activities at the Spring Show, visiting young farmers were pleasantly entertained at a dance in the Empire Hall in the evening, the arrangements for which Air. G. Robinson, district organiser for the Young Farmers' Clubs, was mainly responsible. The stage ixad been artistically arranged by Mrs. W. J. Croucher with largo Dowls of Iceland poppies, calendulas and ranunculi, the same flowers being used to decorate the supper tables, Air. H. Viles (Apiti) fulfilled the duties of M.C., there oeing never a dun moment, with lively music provided by Messrs. Hansen and Prince's orchestra (iximoolton), and further pleasure with eccentric tap-dances contributed by Mr. Tubby Alien. Bexoro introducing Mr. J. Hodgens, M.R., Air. H. J. Lancaster, chairman ox the district council, expressed ins pleasure in welcoming young farmers representative of clubs scattered tnrougnout the length and breadth ol New Zealand. The shearing competition staged at the show had been the largest of its land over put over in the Dominion, he said. He commended the organisation, which had been perfect. Air. E. W. Barnett's chairmanship and splendid service as announcer and, in offering his congratulations, thanked all who had worked so hard to carry the competition through without a hitch. Mr. Lancaster presented the prizes to those of the successful competitors who were present. Air. Hodgens said his presence that evening was simply to wish the young farmers well and express the hope that the evening would be one of enjoyment and pleasure. The speaker paid tribute to the wonderful demonstration of shearing it had been his privilege to witness at the show, and said it must make an appeal from one end of the Dominion to the other. Picking up fleeces had been one of his boyhood jobs, Air. Hodgens said, so he knew something about it. He referred to the activities of the Young Farmers’ Clubs, which, he said, would mean a lot for the future of farming in the Dominion and, in conclusion, expressed the hope that the visitors would take away kindly thoughts of the people of the city and surrounding districts. Later in the evening the Alayor and Mayoress, Mr. and Mrs. A. E, Mansford, arrived, accompanied by some of the finalists in the Miss New Zealand beauty competition, who were specially 1 invited. Supper was expeditiously served by a committee of ladies headed by Airs. J. A. Russell (convener), and in appreciation of members of the Women's Division, Women's Institutes and Young Women's Christian Association, who had assisted in this department, the chairman called for cheers, which 1 were given with great goodwill, j A telegram of good wishes and apology for absence was received from ; Air.
