Surface Flooding in Hawke’s Bay District

BRIDGE WASHED AWAY p«r Press Association. HASTINGS, Last Night. Very heavy rain has fallen during the last two days over the whole of Hawke's Bay, but beyond surface flooding little damage was reported. In Hastings and Napier several streets were temporarily flooded to-night. The only serious interruption to communications occurred when the main south road was blocked at the Woodville end of the Mauawatu Gorge. It is expected to be some days before this is cleared. The temporary bridge in the Te Re hunga gorge, near D&nnevirke, was washed away by the rising river. The Union Airways liner to Napier was unable to make the trip. Owing to the slip in the Manawatu Gorge the Wellington express did not connect with the Wairarapa train and passengers from this train were compelled to travel by the slow tram, which arrived at Hastings three and a half hours after the express. Shipping at Napier was delayed. Tho Doric tttar, which was loading meat, will be held up two or three days. Unless the rain continues to morrow there is no danger of flooding in areas effected by the Winter floods.
