Mangatainoka Athletic Society
ANNUAL MEETING HELD The annual meeting of the Mangatainoka Athletic Society was held in the library hall, Mangatainoka, on Tuesday evening. There was a good attendance of members. The patron (Mr. R. A. Williams) was present and tho president (Mr. W, Fulton) controlled the meeting. After the minutes and correspondence had been dealt with, the annual report of the president was read, in which he congratulated the society on the year’s working, it having been a record year in all ways. 44 Boxing Day, 1937, fortunately was a very fine day, and provided a record in all of the day’s undertakings, as the balance-sheet will show. In fact, l venture to say that the gate receipts were a record and eclipse that of any previous meeting. The meeting was run off in an efficient and expeditious manner, the only discordant note being the accidents which rather marred the latter portion of the day. Various opinions have been expressed as to the cause of these unfortunate incidents, hut I feel these cases, which although regrettable, are unavoidable where large fields are entered.
During the year the Domain Board offered a pound for pound subsidy for improvements which we desired to make. The committee met on the ground and outlined what they considered should be done, and the representatives of the board concurred and a good deal of work has been done to the track and fence under the supervision of our patron (Mr. R. A. Williams). This should make for improved visibility of the finishes of the racing from the stand and better conditions on the track for competitors. To the board for their consideration, I desire to express the thanks of the society. To all I <Jesire to express my appreciation of their help and conisderation during my year of office, which has been a pleasant one, and ask for my successor that same loyal co-operation which has been extended to me. ’ ’ The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £228 11s 3d. The profit on the year’s working was over £6O. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The secretary reported that he had written to the Cycling Centre at Wellington regarding a permit but to date had received no reply. The patron (Mr. R. A. Williams) congratulated the president and the club on the year’s working. Mr. W. Adams also congratulated the president and the club on the success of its meeting. The balance-sheet disclosed a very healthy financial condition, the receipts from all sources were records and resulted in a credit of over £SO after all liabilities were liquidated, this was very encouraging after the previous lean years when the reserves had been dwindling. Mr. Williams and Mr. W. Adams also referred to the statement in very flattering terms and offered their con- ' gratulations to the president.
