Firemen Leave Ship
OVERSEAS VESSEL DELAYED Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 7. After walking on* the Port Melbourne as a protest yesterday, six men of the stokehold complement were later arrested and conveyed under escort by launch to the vessel where she was lying at anchor off Camp Bay. When the ship was ready to leave yesterday morning two of the stokehold crew were missing, and they were not prepared to sail unless two other men were engaged. Although two New Zealanders were signed on to replace the deserters, the firemen still refused to sail, and it was then that the six men walked off. The Port Melbourne proceeded down the harbour and anchored off Camp Bay, and it was only when the men were placed on board there that the vessel was able to sail for Montevideo. The launch contained six constables as well as the deserters. Afater the original two had deserted the men were informed that as the vessel was over-manned previously, two extra men were not required, but tha crew persisted with their demand, and it was then that the two new men were signed on. i
