Ohakea

From Our Own Correspondent. There was a large gathering at the Bailey homestead, Ohakea, on Saturday afternoon, when a garden party organised by the local branch of the National Party was held. The function was opened by the Hon. J. G. Cobbe. who was introduced by Mr Q. Wilson. Visitors were welcomed by the hostesses, Misses Bailey, assisted by Mrs W. E. Pearce, H. J. Fagun and J. li. Perrett. The lawns were a bright scene with pretty frocks intermingled with the flowering shrubs and borders. Proceedings were capably organised and run and great credit is due to the Misses Bailey and members of the family. Unfortunately the weather was not as good as it might have been, but nevertheless a pleasant and successful afternoon was spent. Various stalls were well patronised and many competitions were responsible fur realising a large sum. Those in charge of the various stalls were as follow': Mesdames J. Fagan, H. Masters, and Mr Kilpatrick (produce stall); Mesdames B. Lawrence, E. Green and Miss N. Laurence (sweets and cakes); Mesdames R. Anderson, H. A. Pearce, S. Ingram, Misses M. Anderson, F. Palmer, N and J. Masters, M. Tremain and Mrs Williams (afternoon tea). Those in charge of the competitions, with the winners shown in parentheses, were: Clock croquet, Miss F. Anderson (Mrs B. J. Frecklington); quoits, Airs B. Laurence (Mr J. Bradley); golf putting, Airs R. Scott (Miss Curtis); ladies’ chain stepping. Miss W. Bailey (Mrs L. Staite); men's chain stepping, Air C. Grace (Mr H. G. Wilson); nail driving, Mr G. AlcDonell (Miss M. Bailey and Air G. Jackson); shooting, Mr J. C. Fagan (Mr K. Vile); sheep guessing, Mr G. McKenzie (Mr E. Murray); pinning donkey’s tail. Mrs D. Grace (Mrs B. Laurence). The iced cake was won by Aliss J. Campbell (Taonui); the dinners by Mrs B. McKenzie (Marton) and Mrs R. Scott. The gatekeepers were Messrs K. A. Pearce and W. E. P3aree.
