Women’s Christian Temperance Union
MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Women : s Christian Temperance Union was held Tuesday afternoon, and began with devotional exercises, led by Mrs Holland. The scientific fact followed, given by Miss Sutherland which showed that a large percentage of the huma* body was composed of water; even the bones, dry though they appeared, had a fair percentage of water. Water was the nature and best thirst quencher, alcoholic beverages being of no u»e in this way. Arrangements were made for a party to be given to the children of the cradle roll next Saturday afternoon, four members kindly volunteering to see to the tea arrangements that day. Arrangements for catering for prohibition workers on polling day were also made, volunteers again very kindly offering their services. Reports on the recent district convention held in Pahiatua were given by Mesdames Carter and T. Beggs, for which thanks were expressed by Mrs N. A. Boniface and Miss N. Sutherland, their remarks being endorsed by acclamation. A pleasing feature of the afternoon was two songs by Mrs W. N. Maule, of Ashhurst, her accompanist© being Mrs R. J. McNeilly, to both of whom thanks were expressed by the president for the pleasure they had given. The tea hostesses were Mrs J. H. Wilson and Miss L. C. Thompson, who then handed round the much-appreciated cup of tea. A mock ballot next took place, in which prohibition carried the day (of eourse!). There was, however, one invalid vote which shows how people inadvertently often do not vote as they wish to. The meeting closed with prayer and tho benediction.
