Opens To-day

First-class Fields Are Engaged SINGLE-POOL BETTING The Wanganui Jockey Club’s spring meeting will open to-day and conclude on Saturday when the Wanganui Guineas and Debutant Stakes will be decided. To-morrow, Friday, at 2 p.m. there will be the Two-year-old Parade, for which no less than 25 “youngsters” have been entered. To-day’s programme of eight races is timed to start at 11.45 a.m., the principal events are tho Marangai, Flying and Seafield. Handicaps, and the fields, taking them right through, are of good class, assuring patrons of a very fine day’s racing. The betting will be single-pool. A “line’’ on the Debutant Stakes will be obtained from the parade of two-year-olds which is to bo held on the Wanganui racecourse to-morrow, when tho youngsters will bo despatched from a barrier start at the mile and a-quartef barrier on the course proper. The majority of the Guineas candidates are engaged to-day. Gay Son, Russian Ballet and Tnurangi are in the Flying Handicap, Amigo, Peerless and Homily aro in the Seafield Handicap, Sudan,, Lord Cavendish, Rehearsal and Namara in tho Durio Hack Handicap, and Minga and Nignt Attack are in the Maiden Race.

To-day’s programme opens with the Hunters ’ Steeplechase, run over a course of about two miles. There aro eight acceptors and Taranaki winners engaged are Annoyor (Trial Hunters’ Handicap) and Sa*on (Taranaki Hunt Cup Steeples). Both have been rehandicappcd, but tho extra weight should not stop them to-day. Red Mint was second to Glenvane in tho EgmontWanganui Hunt Cup and Nino Martini second to Annoyer in the Trial Hunters’ Handicap. Of the others, Power Chief, who should be improved, and Kikiroki, who ran well at Hastings, appear to have the best credentials. The betting may point most strongly towards Salon, Annoyer and Kikiroki. Next on the list is the Maiden Race, for which there are 19 acceptors, including a number of very speedy gallopers. Night Attack and Minga aro entered for the Guineas and others that can be expected to find favour are Coronation, Chere Amie, Morning Flight, Prime Quality, Night Attack, Ecstatic and Eurotas. The issue appears very open and barrier positions and the luck of jump-out are sure to have some bearing on the result. Quick beginners will have an advantage on this turning course and horses that aro likely to bo fancied are Ecstatic, Eurotas, Minga and Coronation. Another fine field is engaged in the Hurdles for which Aurora’s Love, Tail Light, Begorrah, Red Rufus, Erebus, Aiguille and Paul Robeson must be respected. Curie is another likely to make a bold showing for ho has been working well at Grecnmeadows. To reduce it to four, the punters may go most strongly for Aurora’s Love, Begorrah, Erebus and Paul Robeson.

There are sixteen carded for tho Putiki Hack Race over a mile and 110 yards. Puroto heads the list with 9.0 and although she has been working well at Awapuni she mignt improve with tho race. The same applies to the Taradale horse, Granvale. Gold Ballad won over seven at New Plymouth and should, if anything, have improved since. Barley Almond is expected to find favour with Awapuni track watchers, but sho may not go too well on the turning track, and of the others Patches and Auto Sweep are sure to have friends. Gold Ballad, Barley Almond, Auto Sweep and Granvale may be tho elect of backers. There are only five acceptors for tho Marangai Handicap and Master Cyklon, winner at New Plymouth, and Liauo aro sure to be in firm demand. Brazen King, however, is capable of upsetting the pool, while Tres Sec’s chances cannot bo overlooked. The three at the head of the handicap are likely to carry most support. The Seafield Handicap has drawn one of the most interesting fields of tho day and a great contest should result. There are uino acceptors and each and overy one of them must be given a chance. The betting is sure to take a wide range but it is possible that most support will be forthcoming for Quadroon, Homily, Silver River and Lucullus Lad. Amigo failed at New Plymouth but ho should go better on his home course. There are 25 acceptors for tho Durie Hack and Wilful Lady and Try Luck will bo bracketed on the machine. With Jazz Boy, Aiyth, a winner at New Plymouth, Thalu, Viracious, Proclamation, Rehearsal, Sudan, Great Legion, Amatory, Sporting Gift, Lord Cavendish and Earl’s Court engaged, tho punters have been set something of a puzzle. Tho betting, however, may indicate Aiyth, Viracious, Great Legion and Sporting Gift. The day will be concluded with tho Flying Handicap. Tho top-weight, Aus-tralian-bred, will be having his first race in New Zealand. Thirteen have been carded and it is a class field. Francis Drake, Laughing Lass, Joviality, Gay Son and Florence Mills have been working well, and Russian Ballet and Taurangi aro reported to be well forward. Orate, Pakanui, if he elects to behave himself, Cullus and Aiyth can also be expected to make a bold showing so that a blanket finish can be anticipated. The punters may go most strongly for Francis Drake, Laughing Lass, Joviality and Florence Mills.
