Important Czech Concessions

RETAIN CONTROL OF FOREIGN POLICY RESULT OF HEAVY BRITISH PRESSURE United Press Association. —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received Tuesday, 10.20 p.m. LONDON, Sept. 6. A Prague messago states that tho Czech Cabinet sat for 5i hours and subsequently it was announced that new proposals are being presented to the Sudeten. Germans. Earlier tho Sudetens had again declared, after a conference with Herr Uenlein, who reported on the Bercntesgaden conference, that tho dispute can only be settled by a comprehensive and rapid realisation of the Carlsbad demands. After the overnight uncertainty concerning the new Czech Government proposals, early morning reports from Prague indicate that they are a supremely important step toward appeasement. It is reliably stated that they grant the Sudeten’s Carlsbad demands almost in their entirety. It is believed cantonal autonomy is being offered with generous i freedom of administration, also recognition of the Sudetens as a 1 legal entity. However, the pro--1 posals refuse the last demand for liberty to profess and practise Nazism, which is regarded as in- ( compatible with a democratic ceni tral Government. A Cabinet communique describes j the offer as “definite,” indicating i that the Government will stand or fall by its latest concessions. The Government is also reported to be firmly holding on to the control of its foreign policy. The easing of the situation at the height of the crisis is believed 1 to be the result of heavy pressure j from Britain.
