Schools Commence Third Term

FEW STAFF CHANGES AND INCREASED ROLLS

Tho grading of primary schools in tho Wanganui Education Board's area will bo governed for next year by the roll numbers as at September 16 this year. Previously tho grading was assessed ou the average roll number throughout tho first four weeks of the third term.

Tho schools entered on their third term of the year on Monday. Attendances aro better than when they closed for the second one, and indications are that the worst of the period of illness has now passed and that attendances are returning to normal.

Thero bavo been few changes in staff in the Palmerston North, schools, but in all cases thero is an increase in the roll numbers, mainly through the introduction of children attending school for the first time.

At the Central ychool the attendance is almost back to normal following the epidemic of sickness prior to the holidays. Twenty now pupils bring the roll number to 745, compared witli 717 at the beginning of last term. The actual attendance yesterday was 679, which compares very favourably with the attendance of 62S prior to the holidays. Miss A. T. Fowlcs has resumed duty after being absent on. sick leave for some time, and Mr. K. B. Cockerill, of Herbertville, Hawke’s Bay, and Misa M. Weeks have taken up positions as permanent assistants. At the Terraco End School 17 new pupils have been admitted, bringing the roll number to 614, compared with 606 at the beginning of last term and 697 at the end of it. The attendance on Monday was 5J4, indicating that there must still be a considerable amount of sickness prevalent, although tho position iB greatly improved compared with tho week prior to the holidays, when the attendance had dropped to 450. There are no changes in staff. The roll at tho College Street ychool now stands at 537, with nine new enrolments, none of them being first attendances, although several five-year-old Uildren and other young children aro expected later. Miss F. M. Knowles, from Taranaki, has taken up her duties in succession to Mrs. E. Wilson, who left tho staff to go to Hawko’s Bay.

Ten new enrolments have been recorded at tho West End ychool and six of these are of children attending for the first time. There has boon ono withdrawal and tho roll now stands at 427. Thero have been no staff changes. At the Hokowhitu School there are 11 new names on the roll, with two withdrawals, anti seven of tho 31 are at school for tho first time. Miss E. Wapp has been transferred back to Hoko-

whitu from Tawhero, Wanganui*, having been away for a year and two terms. She fills a vacancy caused by the departure of Mr. C. J. Adcock to Rangiwaliia under the teachers’ rolioving

scheme. The Hokowhitu school roll 5s now 292.

| Twelve new pupils were enrolled at tho Bussell Street School, bringing tho roll number up to 319, compared with 293 at tho beginning of last term. The position in regard, to sickness has shown a vast improvement, tho total absentees on Monday being no moro than 35, and of these only about 20 are on the sick list. Tho school is now within two of tho required roll number jfor an increased grade, and by the time the grading is attended to on September 16 it is confidently expected the required figure will have been reached. There aro two cdail changes. Mr. J. Allen has accepted, a position as acting headteacher at Waitotara, while Miss E. Cleary, infant mistress, is absent on sick leave. Mrs. F. Allen and Mrs. F. G. Macken, of the Education Board’s relieving staff, are filling the positions temporarily. At the Technical High School Miss N. E. Coup succeeds Miss M. Wood, who relinquished her position as tea\h©r ol general subjects to be married. Miss J. I. Morgau lias also left the staff tn take up work elsewhere, but her successor does not arrive for about a month. Tho school resumed activities on Monday. The Boys and Girls’ High .Schools resumo ou Tuesday next.
