Woman’s Opportunity To Use Her Talents
PRIVILEGE OF EDUCATION A plea for tho assistance of women who had enjoyed the privilege of edu cation in checking evils which, wero known to exist in the Dominion was made by tho Rev. G. V. Gerard in un address to past pupils of the Auckland Girls’ Grammar School at a special service at St. .Matthew's Church on Bunday to murk tho jubilee celebrations of the school. Tho service was largely attended by past and present membors of the staff, old girls and presf"" pupils of tho school.
Bpeaking from tho text, "Thou hast been faithful over a few things; I will make thee ruler over many things," Mr Gerard said old girls of tho school bad been privileged in receiving the benefits of education. They were equipped'to servo prominently in every sphere of life. Tho largo majority had taken their places in the field of home life, and in the homos of New Zoaland women, who liad enjoyed a first-class-Bceondfiry .education ono found or-
ganisation, orderliness, use of wisdom and understanding second to none in the land.
Air Gerard said he doubted whether there would havo been educated women in the world to-day had it not boon lor tho Church of Jesus Christ. Woman had been looked upon us un inferior creaturo and it was only the Kingdom of Christ that had made tho world a new placo for them. It was a tragedy when one came across a woman who. after eating tho fruit of the treo of knowledge given her by God, scoffed at religion, lie hoped there was none present who failed to appreciate the fact that tho freedom and emancipation of women hud come from Jesus Christ aud Him alone.
Mr Gerard pointed out tho good that could be done by educated women in combating the evils which lurked in the shadows of the Dominion. Hu warned tjiem against the waste of ‘alents in foolish and frivolous life.
"I am personally of the opinion that the whole system is wrong. Every man should bo trainod to defend his country if tho need should ariso—it should noi bo left to a fow volunteers,’' said Colonel G. Mitchell at a meeting of the Wellington branch of the South African War Veterans’ Association. "It should not bo a political question. The political parties should eombino in tho matter. What is needed is compulsory training, but you will not got political parties to advocate that because it is a matter of votes."
