AMATEUR BOXING

Manawatu Championships Decided The Manawatu amateur boxing championships for 1938 were decided at the Opera House last night. Thirteen bouts were staged in six weight divisions, and a crowd which tilled the stadium seating saw some attractive boxing. Competitors were present from as far afield as Taihape and Wellington, and with the best of the Palmerston North talent represented, there was no lack of opposition for the visitors. The standard was well up to that seen at previous tournaments. No fault could be found with the arrangements, which were in the hands of a capable body of officials, headed by Mr. E. R. Wimsett (president of tho Manawatu Boxing Association) and Mr. D. H. Armstrong (secretary). The other officials were as follow: Referee, Mr. P. Chase; judges> Messrs. F. Colvin, C. V. Ciochctto and T. Craigie; stage manager, Mr. Jim Purves; announcer, Mr. R. Morton; timekeepers, Messrs. N. D. Stubbs and W. Cry stall; call stewards, Messrs. Jack Purves and A. Trepo. At the conclusion of the programme the trophies won were presented by Air. Wimsett. In divisions in which there was no competition, certificates were awarded, as follow: Fly weight, Ok Hastings; middle weight, F. Petersen; light heavy, W. Williams. Results of the bouts wore os follow: — Paper Weight. Limit: 7 stone. M. Rreft (Palmerston North) 6.12 beat J. Pellow (PaJmerstou North) 6.9 ou points after a very even contest. J. Jones (Palmerston North) 7.0 and J. Richards (Palmerston North) 6.13 were evenly matched. The former got the decision on points. In the final Jones showed up to a shade better advantage. Bantam Weight. Limit: Bst. 9 lbs. G. Hastings (Palmerston North) 7.10 and L. AlcLaughlan (Palmerston North) 8.1 were the only entrants in this division. There w r as very little between the boys, McLaughlan getting a narrow decision. Feather Weight. Limit: 9 stone. L. Parsons (Palmerston North) 8.10 was much too good for V. Bass (Levin) 8.10. The latter fought pluckily back, but his second threw in the towel in the third round, when Bass was in a bad way. A. Byrne (Petone) 8.11 got a victory over D. McPherson (Palmerston North) 8.10 when the latter withdrew in tho last round. Byrne was the aggressor throughout, and his punches had plenty of power. Parsons and Byrne met in the final, and there was a really good go. Byrno enjoyed an early advantage, but Parsons met him half-way in tho last round nd the crowd saw plenty of .action. The decision went to Byrne. Light Weight. Limit: 9st. 91bs.

D. Couglilan (Palmerston North) 9.81 and K. Walker (Taihape) 9.8 were very evenly matched and provided a first-class contest, both displaying good work. Walker seemed to have the edge on Coughlan over the first two rounds, but the last was the local boy 's. The decision to Coughlan met with majority approval. In the final Coughlan met J. Alartin (Petone) 9.7. The first two Tounds were fought at a moderate pace, but in tho last, both men -were full out. Tho decision went to Coughlan. Welter Weight. Limit: 10st. 71bs. J. Walker (Taihape) 10.5 beat D. Palmer (Levin) 10. on points. The bout did not reach a very high level, there being much holding and plenty of wild, erratic swinging. Walker met C. Curtis (Taihape) 10.3 in the final. There was very little for the crowd to enthuse over, the bout being comparatively tame. Walker got the decision by a slight margin. Heavy Weight. E. Fell (Palmerston North) 13.6 beat V. Barnao (Wellington) 13.0 on points The former gradually wore his man down, and the finish saw Barnao in an exhausted state after twice being knocked down. Fell accounted for D. Tatana (Levin, 13.10 in the final. In the first round honours were fairly even, but in the second, Fell repeatedly scored with lefts and rights to the head. Tatana took a lot more similar punishment in the last round, and Fell got the decision by a big margin.
