From Our Own Correspondent, Defence Rifle Clud. A practice shoot was fired on the Ash hurst range on Saturday afternoon. A ten-shot shoot was fired over the 300yds. range with a strong front wind blowing, which decided the members to abandon the shoot after on& range had been completed. R. A. Jones and M. Hausmann scored well under trying conditions, the former making a ten shot possible, which makes a fresh record for the range of three consecutive possibles and a total oi I’7 consecutive bullseyes. Individual scores R. A. Jones 50, M. Hausmann 49, T. Ilomley 44, J. B. Searle 43, J. Henson 40, L. Wotton, 15. McCrue 39, W. G. Romley 3 Rifle Club uance. The dance committee, at the final meeting, confirmed the decision to hold a champion waltzing competition at the dance on August 31, and also to arrange for Miss Beth Parkes and pupils to give a demonstration of ballroom dancing. Various novelty items were decided on and a night of enjoyment is promised to patrons. Trophies alone are creating a great deal of interest, and are displayed in Mr Bristow's shop, and are to be presented to the successful members on the night of the dance. Both modern and old-time dancing are to be catered for and good music is assured from a popular orchestra.
Commencing late on Friday night, a aLrong north to east wind rose, uud blew with great violence early Saturday morning, but moderated a little towards miduay. However, it again rose during the afternoon and evening, till by early Sunday morning it reached gale force. Buildings rocked violently in exposed parts, board fences were blown down and trees suffered. One shop in the main street had a pane of glass blown in, and the shopkeeper waj» obliged to remove his stock. At a late hour on Sunday evening the wind gave no indication of abating. Domain and Cemetery Board. Mr M. P. Wilkin presided over a meeting of the Domain and Cemetery Board, also present being Messrs H. Bristow, J. A. McDonnell, K. D. Davis, and W. N. Brewer. The caretaker reported that trees had been blown down across the tracks in the Domain and that the signboards had again been torn down by some irresponsible persons. During the last heavy floods the river had cut into a portion of the Domain property, and it was decided to cut willows and plant in the affected areas. The receipts for the quarter were JL'29, and the expenditure amounted to £4 10s 9d. Cemetery: The receipts for the quarter were £l9 165., and the expenditure £7 10s. The .secretary reported that there were four burials during the quarter and that five plots had been reserved. The usual mainenance work had been carried out and the beiges are receiving the annual trimming.
