Hokowhitu School
MEETING OF COMMITTEE The monthly meeting of the Hokowhitu School Committee was held on Wednesday evening, Mr H. W. Cox preluding. Others present were Messrs P. E. Crowther (hon. secretary), A. W. Green, J. Stewart, H. Anderson and H. S. Harrod. I The headmaster (Mr A. H. McLean) reported that the present roll number was 285, the average attendance being 1 80.5 per cent. This low average was due to sickness and cold weather during July. The primer classes were most seriously affected, but the present week showed a gradual recovery. The usual medical examination of pupils had been carried out by Dr. Bowden, [and the school inspectors had paid their annual visit at the beginning of this week. The fancy dress ball was undoubtedly a successful function, and the headmaster recorded his apprecia-
tion of the co-operation of the committee, the ladies’ committee and the staff. Miss Wapp had given generously of her time and skill in training the girls for the gavotte, which was enthusiastically received. All the repairs and alterations authorised by the board’s architect had been attended to, except tho widening of the main gateway and repairs to the incinerator. Several panes of glass required attention. A commencement had been made with the preparation of the playground area which -was to be asphalted. It was decided to forward a special letter of thanks to Miss Wapp and Mrs K. Jones for their work in training the children, also to Mesdames Harrod and Bloodfield for their assistance ::: costuming the children. Notification was received from the Wanganui Education, Board that the special supplementary grant allocated i to the school this year was £SS, * of which seven-twelfths, amounting to [ £sl 6s Bd, had been added to tho or- • dinary capitation grant for July.
Tho visiting committee (Messrs Stewart and Andersen) recommended the planting of a double belt of Lawson iana trees across tho back of the east boundary for shelter, and the clearance of 25 pinus insignus stumps, also the provision of a number of short board seats on the grounds for tho children.—lt was decided to investigate the possibility of clearing tho stumps, to plant tho Lawsonianas, and to endeavour to provide the seats at an early date.
