Women’s Institutes

RONGOTEA There was a good attendance at the August meeting despite the fact that I there is a tremendous amount of influenza and other winter ailments prevalent throughout the district. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Kennedy, Fox, Churchill, Hintz, Pedley and tho Misses Nutt and Pedley. One new member, Miss Bawi Davis, was nominated and welcomed. Before the commencement of the business of the afternoon, the president, Mrs McKay, referred to the tremendous loss suffered by the movement in the (passing of Mrs Crewe, members standling in silence as a tribute to the mem* jory of one who had been instrumental ( in helping for the general advancement ;of tho W.L movement, and beloved by all with whom she had come in contact. Mrs Collins, the Institute’s delegate to II l the conference gave an excellent report to the meeting, touching briefly but fully on the whole working of each day of the conference. Members fully appreciated the report because it dealt Iso skilfully with tho vital business "" | which had been transacted that those members who had not. been fortunate I enough actually to attend conference, felt they really knew the work the delegate had put in, and realised to a large extent tho magnitude of tho 1938 conference. A very hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mrs Collins for her wonderful report. The monthly talk on “Nutrition” was given by Mrs Boy Scott, who took as her subject “Tho Square Meal,’* holding the interest of members with a very interesting lecturette. These monthly talks on the subject of nutrition have been thoroughly enjoyed by members, quito a number of useful little items of advice being received from time to time. The president spoke on the duty of the hostesses each month, pointing out that it was necessary for a member who found she was unable to act, to appoint 1' someone to take her place, otherwise the smooth running of the Institute’s monthly hostess system was upset. It it* required just a little more co-operation I

in this way to ensure perfect running. In appointing hostesses the committee tried not to impose on the willing members too often and liked all to take their turn. The thanks of the Institute ( were due to the hostesses each month f6r their work—they did it as a matter ’ of course and seldom had recognition ■ for it. The demonstration for the . afternoon was an unusual and interesting one, Miss Matthews of Foil ding, giving a practical demonstration of i marcel hair waving. This was followed , with close attention by members, who l voiced their appreciation at the conL elusion. With regard to the chair which . was purchased from the' Blind Institute • for a competition, this is now on view , in Messrs Parkes and Co. and particu--3 lars may be obtained from the secret--3 ary, Mrs Collins. Members are remind- - ed that the To Kawau group meeting is - to be held at Rangiotu ou August 17; 1 also that tho drama festival is being i held next week in Palmerston iNorth. 7 The monthly competitions again drew . splendid entries, the winners being:— ) Best flower, Mrs Collins 1, Mrs Bees 2 - and Mrs Will 3; biscuits, Mrs Will 1, i Mrs Davison 2 and Mrs Caverhill 3. The i junior section was won by Miss Lorna - Kansom 1, Miss M. Will 2 and Miss L. t | Davis 3. A dressing table set which ? had been donated by Mrs Larsen was 3 won by Miss Ailsa Buchanan. This ? meeting was a farewell to yet another of the younger members of tho Institute wbo is about to take the plunge 1 into matrimony, and after referring to 3 the loss the Institute had been suffering 2 lately through members getting marr ried and leaving the district. Mrs Mec | Kay called- on Miss Ellie Knight, ths j guest of honour for the afternoon, to 3 'lace the music. Miss Knight had been f a member of the Institute for a number . jof years, during which time she had 3 'hardly missed a meeting, had taken i ipart in the activities of the drama 3 'circle, the gardening circle, had been . a valued demonstrator and had assisted jin tho work of tho Institute in every 3 possible way, and they were parting 1 j with her with real regret. On behalf Jof her.fellow, members the president t asked Miss Knight to accept the array e jof gifts with love and best wishes for her future happiness. The guest- of t (honour was then accorded musical hon--2 ours. Miss Knight in a brief, sincere speech, thanked those present for the wonderful afternoon they had given her, mentioning that she had belonged to tho Institute for the pleasure and knowledge gained from it, she had loved being a member and did not like to think she was severing her connection with it altogether; she would miss them all tremendously. Mrs McKay handed a dainty shoulder spray to both Mrs and Miss Knight. A welcome visitor to the Institute was Mrs s, a former member wbo is now resident in Palmerston North.
