Volunteers have been notified of mobilisation. The United States marines have closed the bridges from the sector outside. The o apanese have declared, rigid martial law in the area surrounding Shanghai and are searching Chines© entering and leaving the foreign areas. The Japanese refused to allow British, American and other foreigners who are refuging in warships to resumo possession of their properties at Kiukiang. The vessels are unable to move owing to Chinese mines and booms. A Dublinite, Mr. P. G. Crawley, commander of the Chinese Customs cruiser Chiang Hsing, also the second ongineer and a boatboy were killed when the vessel was bomebd and set fire by six Japanese seaplanes 36 miles from Hankow. Tho gunboat Gnat has gone to the scene. The survivors were picked up by a junk.
