Fresh Fighting Breaks Out

Soviet Denies Border Infringements Received Wednesday, 11.30 p.m. LONDON, August 3. The Daily Telegraph’s Tokio correspondent says fresh fighting broke out when Soviet troops launched an attack at nightfall on Changkufeng. A later Tokio message says that two battalions of Russians again attacked Changkufeng at 7 a.m., but were repulsed after a sharp engagement. The Japanese maintained their position. Russian artillery resumed the bombardment of the Changkufeng area. The Japanese emphasise that they are acting purely defensively. They denied a single crossing of the Soviet frontier. The spokesman believes the trouble to be entirely due to the local Soviet force. He alleged that 60 Soviet bombers carried out the Kojo raid. The War Office spokesman said regular Red Army forces bad replaced the border guards, hence a more serious view was taken of the position. A Moscow message says the official Tass Agency emphatically denies that Soviet airmen raided Manchukuo or Korea. The Army and Air Force had been given strict orders to defend only Soviet territory. False reports had been circulated by Japan to justify her own attacks against the Soviet.
