The friends of Mrs. H. Essex will regret to learn that she has had to enter Northcote private hospital. Hon. Mr. Justice Quilliam will return to Palmerston North from Wanganui today and resumo tho Supreme Court session at this centre to-morrow. Alderman Sir Frank Bowater, partner in the firm of W. V. Bowater and Sons, is expected to be chosen as the next Lord Mayor of London. Mr W. Marshall, of Paeroa, has been elected president of the New Zealand County Councils' Industrial Union of Employers and representative of *...e union on the advisory board of the New Zealand Employers' Federation. Mr S. Hamilton, tho only candidate from New Zealand who presented himself for the examination held in May last by the Advertising Education Board, Australia, was successful i securing the board's licentiate certificate. Dr. W. V. Searlc, of Harley street, London, and formerly of Oamaru, has been appointed honorary surgeon to the Chelsea Hospital to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Dr. J. BrigbtBannister. Mr G. J. M Best has been appointed to succeed the late Mr C. F. Warren us general manager of the Prudntial Assurance Company, Limited, for Australia and New Zealand. Mr Best has been assistant general manager since 1930.
A cablegram states that Mr J. W. Davidson has been elected to the Strathcona research studentship at St. John’s College, Cambridge. Mr Davidson, who took first-class honours in history at Victoria College last year, is at present on tho research staff of the centennial branch of the Internal Affairs Department.
Sir Herbert Emerson, who is at present on leave, will be unable for reasons of health, to return to India in October to resume the post of Governor of the Punjab, to which he has been reappointed for a further period of two years, says a British Official Wireless message. The King has accordingly approved that Sir Henry Duffield Craik, who is at present Governor of the Punjab during Sir Herbert Emerson's leave, should continue as Governor for this further period.
Mr. D. G. Law, who has been stationmaster at Levin for the past twelve months, has received notice of his transfer on promotion to Maungaturoto, ninety miles north-west of Auckland. Mr. Law went to Levin from Te Kuiti and during his brief residence thero has taken a keen interest in cricket and Rugby football, having been coach of the Horowhenua senior representatives in the latter sphere of sport. He will leave shortly for his new post, his successor being Mr. E. R. Wheeler, of Upper Hutt.
The death of the Rev. George Thomas Marshall, aged 85, occurred at Auckland at his residence. Mr Marshall had been in ill-health for some time. Born in Warwickshire, England, in 1853, Mr Marshall came to the Dominion in 1881 and two years later entered the Methodist ministry. Mr Marshall retired in 1916 and went to Auckland from Port Chalmers. He was acting-principal of the Methodist Theological College in 1919, and from 1917 to 1934 was treasurer of the Methodist Foreign Missionary At one time ho was stationed at Eketahuna.
