Canadian Island to be Fortified

As a sequel to a debate in the House of Commons in which the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. R. B. Bennett, alleged that German agents were attempting to purchase anticosts Island, in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the Government to-day dispatched a Royal Air Force squadron to survey the island with a view to its fortification.

It is owned by the Consolidated Paper Corporation, a German syndicate, which protested that it was interested only in the timber on it.

A Defence Department communique states that its plans will ensure that the island will never fall under nonBritish control.
