Pahiatua Bowling Club

SECRETARY REVIEWS FAST YEAR Mr. G. W. Chatwin, the doyen secretary of the Pahiatua Bowling Club, made the following very excellent and comprehensive report of the 1937-3 S season, which was presented at the annual general meeting of the club on Saturday night:— ‘‘The last season, 1937-38, was not favoured with the best of weather, and several of the inter-club games had to be abandoned. The club has been more than usually affected by the loss of members through death—one life member, Mr. A. Barrell, and two playing members, Messrs. J. Harrison and A. P. Fox. Financially the club had a very satisfactory year ending up with a credit balance of £2O 8s lOd, as against £l3 12s 4d last year. No Improvements of any great moment were undertaken, but a fair amount of upkeep was done—a good deal through the generosity of several members—and the usual top-dressing was dono. The green played most satisfactorily and was a great credit to the green committee, ably led by their chairman (Mr. J. E. Murphy), and to the caretaker (Mr. G. W. Kershaw) who worked most assiduously throughout the season and kept not only tho green but tho surroundings and the building in good order. Home and home visits were arranged with several clubs, some of which were successfully carried out and proved most enjoyable, but some were, unfortunately, spoiled or had to be cancelled owing to fain. Owing to so many clubs now wishing for these home and home games, your committee suggests that it might be advisable to arrange them for one day with each club, so many rinks to play at home and so many away. This method, of course, would take only half as many days, and is rendered more desirable as practically all the clubs now wish to play on Saturdays, whereas previously half could bo played on Wednesday. The club competitions were carried out as usual, though the number was considerably reduced. All were completed and resulted as follows: Senior champion singles, Mr. R. H. Taylor; junior singles, Mr. J. H. Smith; senior pairs, Messrs. Pilkington and Hagan; seniorjunior pairs, Messrs. Hagan and Davey. Mr. Taylor put up what must nearly be a record—in his first year he won the trophy for first-year players, in his second the junior singles, and in his third the champion singles. What he should strive to do in the coming sea son is to win the champion singles again and then go to Palmerston North and win tho champion of champions singles. Your committee desires to congratulate all the winners. 1 ' The club was fairly successful in the inter-club competitions, though they lost tho Byrne Cup after defending it successfully a record number of times. They won and lost the Hanson and Barr and Dixon Cups, but still retain the Oxley Cup and the Gosling Stars.

“Your committee wishes to thank the lady friends of the club for their attendance on the green which is always most welcome, and for their ready assistance with the afternoon teas; all those members who devoted so much time and care to tho welfare of tho club, and whom it would be invidious to particularise, and to the Press for its space. In conclusion, your committee thanks you for having placed your confidence in them, and wishes their successors as happy, peaceful and enjoyable season as they have had.”
