School Committees

COLLEGE STREET MEETING Present at last evening's meeting of the College Street School Committee Were Messrs. H. G. Mills (chairman), C. C. Aitkin, H. Christmas, J. Creighton, E. L. Cruickshank, L. N. Paddy, E. Persspn, E. A. Shackleton (secretary), hnd W. R. Taylor. The headmaster, Mr. L. J. Plank, reported a roll of 537 and an average attendance of 479. The attendance had been affected by sickness, chiefly colds. He acknowledged a donation of pattern books from Alexander Clark, Ltd. Arbor day would be carried out as usual. The midget team had been successful in winning the midget Rugby competition. The committee congratulated the midgets on their win and the two coaches, Messrs. Warwick and Taylor, on the , successful issue to their training of the team. The Education Board advised that their chief agricultural instructor had been asked to report on the matter of improving the playing area. The board also advised that authority had been given for the installation of two drinking fountains and other facilities. TERRACE END SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING In the absence of Mr. W. B. Tennent, Mr. R. C. Donald presidod at the monthly meeting of the Terraco End school committee last evening. Others present v/ero Messrs. L. GsAuner, H. L. Gunninghame, E. P. Wix, J. Fyfe, H. D. Milne and E. Blackwood. The headmaster (Mr. A. W. Thompson) reported that the numoer on tko roll was 601 and. the daily attendances, duo to measles and influenza colds, hau been very Jow, falling as low as 442 last week. The position this week was slightly improved, there being 474 present yesterday. On July 20 me annual examination of the school was conducted by tho inspectors, MessrS. Boden, Merriagton and Crasby. An additional nurse had been appointed to tho dental clinic, Nurse JL Clark, from Picton, having commenced her duties on July 21. This would enablo the nurses to overtake CTTb leeway in connection with new entrants, and all would now be able to obtain dental treatment. At the invitation of tho Terrace End Progressive Association, tho senior classes, subject to favourable weather conditions, would attend the opening of tho new park in FTtzroy street this afternoon at 2.30 p.m. Tho school would close on Friday, August 19, and re-open on Monday, September 5, foi* the second term vacation. Speaking to the report, Mr. Thompson declared that the sickness wa.« mainly among the infants of the school. Ln one classroom only nine of 44 pupils were present on one occasion and in another only 12 of 36 pupils. The attendances were better in tho higher classes. A number of families were affected with measles and those who came in contact with the sick children had to stay away from school.

Air. Blackwood said that after the matter had been referred to the milk-in-schools committee, the temperature of the milk supplied to the children had been raised from 40 degrees to 50 degrees. Mr. Thompson remarked that the improvement had already been noticeable.

Mr. Blackwood remarked that three cricket pitches in the playing area known as tho pit were too dangerous, and tho ground at the back of the school would need rolling and topdressing. Mr. Thompson suggested closing the midget football ground and staking it off as a suitablo cricket area. Tho matter was left in the hands of a sub-committee.
