Bush Rugby

THIRD GRADE CUP MATCHES Last Saturday two third grade matches were played at Rugby Park, Pahiatua, for the Studebaker Cup, carried off by Pahiatua when they defeated Hukanui by 26 points to nil, and the Kelly Cup, won by Mangatainoka when they defeated Nireaha 9—o. The ground was in fair condition considering snow had fallen the previous night. The day was dull and the air very cold with winds from the snowclad hills. The following were tho teams for the Studebaker Cup:— Pahiatua (green and black): Hunt, Teahan, L Veale, Croad, Mills, Paget, M. Glassey, Morgan, T. Veale, Bourke, Bentley, Sowry, D. Gunn, D. Glassey, A. Gunn. Hukanui (red): Cavanagh, McDowall, Webb, C. Mabey, A. Mabey, Harrington, Goodin, Daldy, Sutherland, Dougherty, Moore, Udy, Southey, Clapperton, D. Udy. Mr. W. Lawry refereed. Hukanui kicked off and Pahiatua were quickly on the attack, the ball being taken to Hukanui *s twenty-five, to be returned through a free kick. Play was taken into Pahiatua*s territory and was carried on until T. Veale with the ball at his toe carried the game to Hukanui *s twenty-five to race over the goal line for the first score. T. Paget took the kick, but the ball went outside. Pahiatua 3, Hukanui 0. Hukanui took play into Pahiatua *s territory. A bright movement by Bourke and Morgan reversed the position and from within Hukanui *s twenty-five, W. Teahan picked up and scored a good try. T. Paget faile dto convert. Pahiatua 6, Hukanui 0. Hukanui were attacking near Pahiatua *s twenty-five line when C. Sutherland passed out a wild pass which was intercepted by T. Veale, who raced up and scored an easy try between the posts. The conversion was kicked by Veale, making the score Pahiatna 11, Hukanui 0, which was the half-time score.

In the second half Pahiatua were on the attack from the drop-out and were soon attacking near Hukanui *s goal line when T. Paget dived for the line to go over. T. Veale took the kick, but failed to convert. Pahiatua 14, Hukanui 0.

Hukanui thus far had not crossed Pahiatua *s half-way line. Pahiatua were again back on Hukanui *s goal line where a number of scrums were formed until a free kick was awarded to Hukanui, the ball being kicked well upfield. From a line-out Paget, in a good movement, carried the ball from his own twenty-five right down to his opponents* twenty-five line. A free kick was awarded Pahiatua 20 yards straight in front of the goal posts. T. Veale put the kick over to bring the score up to Pahiatua 17, Hukanui 0. From a forward scramblo Bourke put the ball out to Paget who went over. Pahiatua 20, Hukonui 0.

In the next good movement Teahan received the ball on the twenty-five mark and raced over to score. Pahiatua $3, Hukanui 0. From the half-way line Teahan secured the ball and raced downfleld, where he was grounded ten yards from the goal line, but he managed to pass out to T. Veale who crossed the line to make the final score Pahiatua 26, Hukanui 0. The presentation was made to the Pahiatua captain by a well-known Bush Rugby supporter, and a past president of the Association, Mr. E. Lett, who handed over the Studebaker Cup amid cheers. KELLY CUP MATCH In the second game of the day for tho Kelly Cup the following were the teams, the referee being Mr. Bob McCulloch:— Mangatainoka: Fulton, J. McDougal, D. Bicknell, A. McDougal, Howell, Duncan, Tait, Dick, Reichenbach, Henaersou, Kerrison, Gillard, Gunn, Scales, Swanney. Nireaha: D. Goggin, H. Littlex, D. Drysdale, R. Burling, R. Shannon, C. Goss, E. Wright, C. Hansen, A. Butler, A. Elliott, H. Bilby, K. Death, A. Goss, J. Petersen, B. Davidson. Mangatainoka kicked off, the ball going out. Howell, with the ball at his toe, carried the leather to within ten yards of the goal-line. A scrum was ordered and McDougal picked up and went over. Bicknell kicked, but failed to convert.—Mangatainoka 3, Nireaha 0. Play was carried on near the halfway lino until, with a number of linekicks, Nireaha gained ground. A scrum on the Mangatainoka twenty-five line gave Goss an opportunity to got up.

Nireaha handled for quite a few minutes the game was played in Mangatainoka 's twenty-five. Nireaha, with only 13 men, were very unlucky not to go over. Bicknell saved on many occasions and put in some good kicks downfield. Mangatainoka pressed hard and J. McDougal crossed the goal-line. Bicknell failed to convert.—Mangatainoka 6, Nireaha 0.

Mangatainoka kept play in Nireaha *s territory until Goss, with a well placed kick, took play over into Mangatainoka *s territory, where a series of scrums took place. Right in front, 15 yards from Mangatainoka *s goalmouth, a scrum was ordered. Mangatainoka picked up and the game was taken right downlield, Bicknell taking the pass to go over. Fulton failed to convert.—Mangatainoka 9, Nireaha 0.

Half-time was called soon afterwards. In the second half Nireaha fielded a full team and were soon attacking. A free kick was awarded Nireaha, but Death failed to put the kick over. Mangatainoka were on the ball and soon transferred play right up to near Nireaha *s goal-line, but Nireaha cleared and the ball was taken downfield. Ragged play followed with a number of line-outs and scrums near Mangatainoka *s twenty-five line. Nireaha tried hard to get over, but Mangatainoka *s backs saved and play was taken up to the half-way line. Nireaha again gained ground and were well into Mangatainoka *s twenty-five and play was carried on until Mangatainoka brought play to half-way. Time sounded shortly after, the score remaining Mangatainoka 9, Nireaha 0.

Mr. M. Reichenbach handed over the Kelly Cup to the winning Mangatainoka team, their captain making a suitable reply amid cheers.
