Rules for Cyclists
SUGGESTIONS IN ENGLAND LONDON, July 9. Eight suggestions to reduce accidents in which pedal cycles are concerned were placed by the Association of Muni* cipal Corporations before the House of Lords Committee on the Prevention of Road Accidents. The proposals set out by the association in their evidence wore;— Cycle Hacks whore practicable; use to bo compulsory. Compulsory red rear lamps. Efficient brakes. Penalties for careless riding, trick riding, or failure to give proper signals Ban on racing and speed trials on a public highway. Cyclists to report accidents. Cycles to havo adequate instrument giving audible warning of approach. Registration plates for pedal cycles. With regard to pedestrians, tho association suggested that “suitable legislation should be introduced to control pedestrians in their use of carriageways. This can best be effected by making it an offence to ‘walk carelessly.' " As to the motorist, the association stated that ho was “already overburdened with legislation in a restrictive form, and it is questionable whether such legislation is bringing about the results which were hoped for. In our opinion few of- the laws- relating to motorists make any contribution to accident reduction."
