4th Mounted Rifles
CONFERENCE OF OFFICERS A conference of regimental officers of B Squadron of the 4th Mounted Rfles (motorised) was held on Friday in Palmerston North. The officers who attended were as follow: Colonel I. T. Standish (officer commanding the Central Command), Captain J. W. Barry, N.Z.S.C. (area officer), Captain B. Norman (officer commanding squadron, Palmerston North), Captain It. F. Burch Hopkirk, R.Q.AI. (Palmerston North), Captain A. H. Ferguson (2nd in command, Palmerston North), Lieutenants H. Al. Blaeklock (Ohakune), D. L. Broome (Taikapo), A. M. Blundel (Alarton), H. M. Cameron (Marion), A. B. Abel (Hunterville), P. S. Crisp (Levin). Various subjects relating to training for the ensuing year were discussed which should result in increasing efficiency throughout the unit. Information relating to now uniforms, equipment, etc., was received. It was evident that a renewed interest in recruiting was being shown and was apparent in most centres. Officers reported that ranks in the country troops were showing great keenness and it was hoped to create the same feeling in the city. Efforts were being made to increase the strength in Palmerston North, and this should not prove to bo difficult. Apart from the interesting work which was carried out by the squadron during its training, which would appeal to the right type of recruit, employers were realising the necessity for such training, and in many instances were assisting recruiting by encouraging their employers to interest themselves in tho work. Dates for week-end bivouacs and the annual camp were fixed; the latter will be held during the month of May.
