Two Helens in Wimbledon Final
MRS. MOODY’S HARD FIGHT LONDON, June 39. At the Wimbledon tennis championships the semi-finals of the womens singles were played to-day, Mrs WilisMoody defeating Frau Sperling and Miss Helen Jacobs defeating Miss Alice Marble. The semi finals of the men's doubles were also played. Miss Jacobs rose to the big occasion letter than Miss Marble, who hit more winners than Miss Jacobs, but foozl-d i eturns at critical points. Mrs Wills Moody and Frau Sperling bad a marathon, the first set lasting over an hour, v/ith innumerable draw .- out rallies and deuces. Frau Sperling dropped two set-points in the first set, which Mrs Wills-Moody won after her tnira set-point. WOMEN’S SINGLES. Semi-Finals. Mrs Wills Moody (U.S.A.) defeaiec Frau Sperling (Denmark), 12--10, 6— 4 Miss Helen Jacobs (U.S.A.) defeated Miss Alice Marble (USA.), 6—#, 6—* MEN S DOUBLES. Fourth Round Kukuljevic and Pallada (Yugoslavia) defeated Sturgeon and Tuckett (Britain), 6—3, 10 —8, 6 —4. Semi-finals. D. Budge and C. G. Mako (U.S.A.) defeated Hughes and Wilde (Britain) 6—2, 6—4, 3? — 10. Henkel and Metaxa (Germany) defeated Dallos and Szigeti, 6—4, B—6, 9—7. MIXED DOUBLES Fifth Round. Henkel (Germany) and Mrs Fabyaz, (U.S.A.) defeated Olliff (Britain) and Mrs Heine Miller (S. Africa), 7— 5, 5—7, 6—2. Quarter finals. Russell and Miss James defeated Boussus (France) and Miss Wynnl (Australia), 6—2, 7—9, 6—4. Shayes and Miss Saunders (Britain) defeated Brugnon (France) and Miss 'i Coyne (Australia), I—G, G—l, 7—5. DAVIS CUP COMPETITION LONDON, Juno JO. At a meeting of represontativ es of the Davis Cup nations the proposal to hold a biennial instead of an annual competition was defeated by 14 votes to 17.
