Ashhurst
From Our Own Correspondent The annual concert and dance of the Women’s Institute was held on Wednesday evening, when the seating space was fully taxed by the large and appreciative audience. The stage decorations were carried out by Mrs A. Currie, and presented a colourful sight. The opening item on the concert programme was rendered by the orchestra, followed by the Misses Isaac in a tap dance; Mrs D. Maul, songs; Miss Betty Murphy, recitations; Mr Cronin, songs; Miss E. Orr, Irish jig; Mrs Cameron, songs; Miss Whittaker, recitations; Miss Bovis, songs; and a playette by members of the Whakarongo Drama Circle, the players being Misses W. Vautier, Newcombe, Mrs Morris, Mr Lynch and Mr Morris. At the conclusion of the concert programme, supper was served by the ladies’ committee, after which the floor was cleared for dancing., A professional orchestra supplied the music and the dances were thoroughly enjoyed by the large number who remained for the dance session. Novelty dances were won by Mrs W. Brewer ana Mr G. Gavigan (Gay Gordons), and Miss Beth Ilomley and partner (Monte Carlo). Messrs W. N. Brewer and H. Woodroofe were INI’s.C. All roads will lead to the Ashhurst town hall next Wednesday, when the annual masquerade, plain and fancy dress ball will again be held. The committee is leaving no stone unturned in the effort to beat last year’s record attendance, and good prizes are offered and a wonderful evening assured to all who attend. A good orchestra has been secured and the evening should abound with first-class music and much merriment at the unmasking. Full particulars will be advertised in this paper at a later cate.
