Breach of Licensing Laws
MAGISTRATE THREATENS IMPRISONMENT Per Press Association. INVERCARGILL, .Last Night. A warning that second offenders against the licensing laws would be liable to three months' imprisonment instead of a line, was issued by the Magistrate (Mr. R. C. Abernathy) when imposing a hue of £2U and costs on Leslio Donald William Manson in the Magistrate’s Court to-day.
Manson, who pleaded guilty to selling intoxicating liquOr in Invercargill lust Saturday, to oxposiug liquor xor sale rind to obtaining liquor to be delivered to a no license Urea without notifying that he was resident of such a district, was fined on the charge of selling liquor and was convicted and discharged on the other counts. He was allowed u month in which to pay. Defendant was the lcssco of a number of rooms known as Everybody’s Buildings, stated Senior-86rgeant Kelly. When tho police visited tho place last Saturday they had found .17 full bottles of b«6r in the kitchen in a ro.mi off which were six men each with a glass of beer at one table. At another table were two men With two bottles and to full glasses. Defendant frankly admitted that the men had come for bocr, that he had sold it to them and had been selling liquor for some time, f ourteen more bottles of beer, making a total of 31, wore found downstairs. A friend of defendant had, according to defendant’s statement to the police, brought liquor in from tho couatry, tat had not notified the authorities that it was intended for a no license area.
