Horses for Trentham
AWAPUNI TRACKS IN GOOD ORDER RIDING ENGAGEMENTS ANNOUNCED. The weather was line and cold for yesterday's track work at Awapuni and the sky was overcast with rain not very far away. The course proper was open and the horses were galloping nest the rails, the going being really good. The programme was interesting for the centre is well represented at Marton and also at Trent ham. The best effort of the morning was possibly the six-fur-long sprint of Quadroon and Bluffer who were together with the former going easily after having taken 1.19 1-5 for the distance. Among the earlier workers were Prediction (G. R. Tattersall), Cuddler (J. Chaplin) and Great Hope (I. Howe). Prediction was given a work-out over seven furlongs, running the last two in 2G. Cuddler was given a similar task and after going easily to the home stretch, the last two were covered in 27. Great Hopo sprinted live furlongs in 1.7 after taking 41 1-5 for the first first three. Taitoa (S. Anderson) was going along easily in front of Strolling (Atkins; and Fine Gold (Y. Dye) at the ond of half a mile cut out in 56 and they clocked 14 to the furlong. Great Legion (Tattersall) was jogged round to sprint home the last three. Ho jumped away smartly but the saddle slipped forward before he had gone a furlong and his timo for tho full dia; tancc was 40 secs. Titter (I. Howe) and High Peer (W. J. Broughton) were associated in a livefurlong flutter and after High Peer had set tho paeo to the straight Titter drew level and was a head in front at the finish. The first two took them 27 2-5 and the full distance 1.6 4-5. High Peer is to race at Marton on Saturd-iy and it is understood ho is then to be put asido until the spring. Quadroon (Bowden) and Bluff (Stewart) -went away quickly with tho former getting tho better of tho jump out but Bluffer soon ranged up alongside him. They ran tho first furlong in .14 1-5, three in 39 3-5, four in 53 4-5 and they were going very smoothly at the finish. Blue Steel (C. Thomson) galloped a mile and he went evenly throughout, clocking just over 14 to the furlong in running the last seven in 1.41 3-5. Sergra (Broughton) could have improved upon 41 2-5 over three, and Bar ley Almond (E. Stewart) was clear of Merry Thought (H. Johnstone) at tho end of five cut out in 1.7 2-5.
Sporting Gift (Dye) moved smoothly throughout a three-furlong sprint which occupied 40 1-5 after a slow beginning.
Selkirk (H. Stewart), who did not do himself justice at Dannevirke, easily beat Tidewaiter (Tattersall) over fivo which took him 1.6 3-5, the last two in 26. It was a nice effort on the part of Selkirk.
Taumau (H. Johnstone) drew away from Warehi (J. Leach) in their sevenfurlong task and he was still away at tho finish to eomploto tho distance in L3G 1-5, the last three in 40 •1-5. It was a very attractive performance on the part of Taumau. Catalogue (A. McDonald) and Conveyer (B. Jvowhai) was sprinted an easy five furlongs and there was littlo between them at any stage. They averaged 14 to the furlong for tho first three, and the pace was then increased and they came homo tho last two in 25 3-5 to complete in 1.7 3-5. They will bo ridden by G. R. Tattersall at Trentham. Royal Limond (Kowhai) beat Manawatu (McDonald) over five and he was clocked to ran the distance in a tick under 1.10.
Aurora's Love (J. Leach) and Skyfull (S. Anderson) were galloped a mile and with the former making the early pace they rail the first three in 42 and live in 1.10 2-5. By then Skyfull had drawn level and they were together crossing the top. Over tho last bit, however, Aurora's Love drew out and won by a couple of lengths, the time for the full distance being 1.50 1-5. Puroto (J. Chaplin) and Entheos (Howe) were companions in a similar task. Puroto was away first but she was steadied and they wero together turning into tho back. Tho first threo took them 41 3-5 and five 1.9 4-5 and they were still on terms at the finish, the full distance taking them 1.50 3-5. All Blood (Dye) sprinted a couplo of furlongs in 265. The Peach Brandy-Elvactto gelding (J. Chaplin) was put over tho pony lnirdlo and then taken out to jump three hurdles. He accomplished his task tyPaugo (W. J. McDowell) and Taillight (C. BRILLIANT ITALIAN COLT'S RECORD FOURTEEN IN A ROW PARIS, June 27. I Nearco, winner of the Grand Prix de ! Paris, has not yet been beaten. He has won 14 races in succession. His owner is the Italian Signor Frcderico Tesio, who trains the colt himself. YESTERDAY’S WORK AT TRENTHAM ’CHASERS AND HURDLERS PROVIDE CHIEF ATTRACTION The weather was dull and threatening, with light rain at the close of yestorday’s programme at Trentham. The track early was hard after a frost, but it soon thawed out and became heavier. The jumpers occupied tho main stage, most of those from the centre engaged at next week's meeting being sent along over the fencos. ‘ ‘ Kangatira," of the Post, had the following comment about the work:— lied Sun (M. Reardon) and Monteloo (D. Gordon) were sent over the country on tho inside of the course. Red Sun was not jumping as well as usual, and though he did not mind tho brush and tho boards, he ran off on each circuit at the sod wall. Monteloo jumped the six fences splendidly. Red Sun was not sent back to the sod wall, with which ho was having his first experience, but he was later schooled alone over six hurdles, again not fencing quite as well as usual. There is a leaning towards Red Sun for tho Wellington Steeplechase, but his display yesterday morning was disappointing. The first of the hurdlers to school were Jewish Lad (B. Sullivan) and Sunder (A. Sagar), who jumped six fences soundly. Jewish Lad stood off and fenced brilliantly for a novice. Sunder was less spectacular but he was safe. Lustral (M. Reardon) and Sunce (D. Gordon) also gavo an attractive exhibition over six fences. Both horses jumped very fast and without blemish. Lustral, however, was just skimming the battens and ho left his trainer a bit anxious as to how ho would jumj) the straighter hurdles on race day. Trentham will have only three representatives at Marton on Saturday, Lustral, Quexona and Matoru. Quexona (A. Foster) did nQt shape too well against Fairy Dale (R. D. Gerrand), who, with a stronger rider aboard, finished three lengths in front at the end of half a mile in 53 4-ssec. Matoru was worked ahead of this pair, but was not seriously galloped, though he was hitting out nicely at tho close. Punerua (S. G. Robinson) beat Yours Truly (L. T. Nesbitt) by a couplo of lengths over livo furlongs in 3 rain. 7scc., tho last half-mile in 53sec. Yours Truly did not finish as well as usual, but ho seemed all right after the gallop. Debham (A. G. P. Newnham) was just in front of Sigurd (G. Flood), with Phil (H. Duncan) threo lengths away, after running five furlongs in 3 min. 6sec., the last half-mile in 52 2-ssec. Rockingham (T. Young) and 1-iauo (S. Wilson) woro together at the end of five furlongs in lmin. Bsec., the last half-mile in 53 3-ssec. Kinloch (Wilson) beat Ugly Duckling (F. Power) by a length over an easy five furlongs in lmin. llsec. Raroa (Newnham) finished up her work with a short spriul. Arctic King (Wilson) beat Essex (Nesbitt) by three parts of a length over six furlongs in lmin 20 l-sscc., the last half-mile in 54 3-sscc. Essex appeared to be going the better till ho struck a very soft patch near the rail. Batsham (A. W. Sim) was a neck ahead of Diareus (R. A. Hawkings'), going well, with Protectress (W. Doyle) a short length back, after five furlongs in lmin. 7 l-ssec., the last half-mile in 53 3-ssec. Myriam (J. Nicholson) and Royal Spades (V. Bevan) ran an easy half-mile together, and Beau Gallante (P. Burgess) did a round at a swinging pace. Southern Blood (Sullivan) was given a like task. Sunbeam (Burgess) outstayed Mother-in-Law (J. McCauley), with Laggard (R. Hawes) closing on the filly after running six furlongs in lmin. 22 3-ssec., the last half-mile in 55 3-5 sec. Sunbeam is working better than ever he has at present. He gavo away a start and then left Mother-in-Law over the last furlong. Laggard was galloped on at Dannevirke, but it was nothing serious. HAWKE’S BAY HUNT NOMINATIONS RECEIVED
