From Our Own Onrrrsnonneat. Late Rev. David Martin. The funeral of the late Rev. David Martin, of Feilding took place In Apiti on Saturday morning. A large number of relatives and friends attended the service in the Apiti Presbyterian Church conducted by the Rev. A. L#. Dixon, of Feilding. assisted by Rev. L. J. liodson. of Apiti. The interment took place at the Apiti cemetery, and the pall bearers were the three sons. Messrs Stanley and v\ illiam Martin and Rev. David Martin, ami two so ns-inlaw, Messrs Smith, of Hastings. and Whetton, of Dannevirke. and Mr Eric McFarlane. The many beautiful floral emblems covering the casket testified to the esteem felt for the deceased gentleman, and the sympathy of » wide circle of friends will go out to Mrs Martin and family in their bereavement Methodist Missionary Meeting.
A deputation missionary meeting was held on Wednesday evening last, when an interesting and instructive lantern lecture on life in the Solomon Islands was gl\ en by Rev. A. A. Hensley. The lecturer lias reoentlv returned to New Zealand a^ er IS years of sen-ice in the mission fields, and visited Apiti in the course of a North Island tour on deputation work. Rev. Ashworth presided and opened the meeting with prayer, after which speciahymns were sung. There was a good attendance and a collection was taken up to further the mission work. Card EveningMr and Mrs W. J. Viles entertained nearlv 30 friends on Thursday evening at a, card party in aid of Anglican t hurch funds. There were tournaments for bridge and euchre, while others enjoyed billiards and eribbage. The hostess was assisted in the serving of supper by her daughter. Mrs J. R. Strahan. and daughters-in-law, Mesdaines Norman and Athol Viles. Rev F*. E. Fleury thanked Mr and Mrs Viles for entertaining their friends so pleasantly and at the same time aiding the church funds. Prizes were won as follow: Bridge, Mrs S. H. White and Rev. Fleury: euchre, Miss Shirley Prujcan and Mr Evan Osborne. Personal. Miss Mclntyre and Mr A. Mclntyre, of Waikanae, are staying with Mrs H. C. Mclntyre, M&koura road. Golf. The ladies’ played a stroke competition on. Saturday afternoon. The best card was handed in by Mrs Buckman, who won the prize. The consolation was won by Mrs M E. A. Martin. Mrs T. K. McLean donated the prizes. On Saturday next the ladies will play a tombstone competition, for which there will also be a surprise trophy. The draw Is as follows: Mrs Willis and Miss Osborne: Miss Hooper and Miss M. McKay; Mrs Hooper and Miss P. Swift: Mrs J. Jensen and Mrs Buckman: Mrs J. Osborne and Mrs W. Duncan: Mrs McLean and Mrs Caton: Mrs “Watson and partner. The men played the first qualifying round for the men’s championship, in conjunction with a stroke handicap competition, which was won by C. Cockbum. The club president, Mr C. Buckman, donated a turkey, which was raffled and won by Alec Harland. Basketball. The Apiti High School girls on Saturday morning played a match against llangiwahia school old girls. Apiti won 9—2. The referees were Miss Osborne and a visitor from Ranglwahia.
