Airs. C. Milner, Fitzherbcrt West, is visiting Wellington and is the guest oC Airs. Robert Turner. The death has occurred in Wellington of Colonel Alexander Reid Young, a former diroctor of the Live Stock Division of the Department of Agriculture. The many friends of Mr. J. 11. Harnish will regret to hear that he is seriously indisposed and was admitted to hospital last week. Air. G. J. Donuc, formerly of Hastings, has been admitted before Mr. Justice Callan at Auckland as a barrister and solicitor oE the Supremo Court of New Zealand. Air. C. J. E. Smith, of New Plymouth president of the New Zealand Badminton Federation, is accompanying the members of the Australian badminton team on their tour of the North Island. Air. C. Player, a commissioner representing primary producers on the Melbourne Harbour Trust, who is going to the United States to examine the crane systems in use at American ports, was a through passenger by the Alariposa. Air. W. B. Tripe, a district commissioner in Tanganyika, who has been spending about two months revisiting New Zealand on holiday, left Auckland by tho Alariposa for San Francisco on his way back to Africa by way of England. Air. N. S. Falla, chairman aud managing director of the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand, Ltd., who has been in Canada and the United States for some weeks, arrived in Loudon last Wednesday, accompanied by Mrs. Falla. Rev. J. 11. C. Fritz, dean of tho Concordia Theological Seminary, St. Louis, Alissruri, passed through Auckland by the Alariposa from Sydney on his way back to the United States after attending the centenary celebrations or the establishment of the Lutheran Church in Australia. Dr. Sydney Townend, of Leeds, ha-> been appointed to the staff of tho New Zealand Wool Alanufacturcrs’ Research Association. Dr. Townend has had experience of wool : anufacturiug problems in both America England. He is expected to arrive in New Zealand in September. He will inspect on his way improvements -ir.de in France, Poland and Bolgium in wool machinery. The death occurred in the Alastcrton Hospital early yesterday morning of Mr. George Thomas Allen, editor ami proprietor of the Eketahuna Express, and one of tho best-known and most highly respected residents of that district. Tho late Air. Allen, who was a native of Taranaki, and a moqiber of one of tho pioneer families of that province, started life as a farmer, but entered the newspaper business over thirty years ago iu partnership with Mr. A. H. Vile, later taking over his part-
ner’s interests. Mr. Alien was closely associated with tho various activities lor the advancement of the tdwn and district and wua universally esteemed for his likeable personality and gener-
osity. Only two days before entering the hospital for a critical operation he was entertained by the mombers of the Eketahuna Club when a record gathering elected him a life member. His passing camo as a great shock to residents of Eketahuna as a few days before his illness Air. Allen appeared to bo in the best of health. He is survived by his widow (who is a daughter of the lato Air. Henry BilUiis, of Palmerston North;, a son, Air. John Sheppard Alien (Sydney, N.S.W.), and a daughter, Mrs. H. S. Aldrich (Hamilton;.
