“LOVE AND HISSES’ * STABS WINCHELL, BEBNIE AND SIMON (State: Coming soon.) “Love and Hisses” marks a new triumph for Darryl F. Zanuck who selected Sidney Lanfield for the joh of directing, after his success with ••Sing Bahy Sing,” “One in a Million,” “Thin Ice” and “Wake Up and Live.” Lanfield must have had his hands full. The greatest return match in hiss-story (“Wake Up and Livo” started it) not only stars La Simon and Winchell and Bcrnie, but adds ns featured players a new team of zanies in Bert Lahr and Joan Davis. Tho story tells os that Ben Bernie, the “old Maestro,” discovers (Simone Simon) a groat singer. He asks “old pal” Winchell, America’s one-man newspaper, to build her up in his column. Winchell turns the band leader down, as should be expected, so : Bernie schemes a plot. Adopting as [ exotic masquerade, Simono lets Win* chell “discover” her himself, and the columnist showers reams of publicity upon her. Just before Bernie’s new club is to open, with Simone as star, sbo reveals the plot to Winchell. Dismaved at having been taken in, Winchell plans a four-stur vengeance upon his l’avourito enemy. Revenge by any other man is sweet, but by Winchell it’s hilarious. The climax brings tho two feudists together at the opening of Bernie’s club, featuring their co-discovery, Simone, singing for them both, Tho ending is happy, even though tho truce may be temporary.
