SWORDS CROSSED WITH CITIZENS’ LUNCH CLUE An interesting debate—" That the United States Has Made a Dominant Contribution to World Progress’’—was held at the weekly meeting of the Palmerston North Literary and Debating Society last evening. The debate was a challenge match against the Citizens’ Lunch Club which was represented by Mes. a <a J H. Fleck, W. Wilson and F. Opie (affirmative) and the Debating Society by Mr. E. O Watson, Miss E. Bhd an*. Mr. R. C. Burnett (negative;. In welcoming the vLiiii.g team, the president, Mr. T. C. Watson, said the society always looked forward meeting an outside team and the visit paid by the Citizens’ Lunch Club team v ould, he was sure, be s pleasure to all. Tho adjudicator was Air. L. Hardy, who complimented the leader of the affirmative, Mr. J. B. Fleck, on his outstanding case for democracy —the outstanding contribution of America to world progress He awarded tho decision in favour of tho affirmative side, Mr. F. Opie gaining the highest marks of the evening. Tho winner of the S. M. Carlton medal for the best speaker of the evening in the society was Air. R. C. Burnett. A vote of thanks to the adjudicator was proposed by Air. Watson/, who also heartily congratulated the Citizens Luach Club on winning tho debate. Mr. J. B. Fleck returned thanks on be Iml f of the Lunch Club and expressed ! the desire that a further debate be arranged. The president reminded those present that tickets for tho American negro university debating team against Aiassev College next week were now avail able. At the conclusion of the debate supper was served by the executive.
