Thief Struck by Car
ATTEMPTING TO BREAK AWAY Per Press Association. CHKIOTCHUttCH, June 27. Struck by a motor-car after running out of a city store where he was detected in an attempted theft, John Black, aged 57, received injuries necessitating his admission to hospital. The incident occurred on June 14 and this morning Black appeared in the Magistrate’s Court charged with stealing a woman’s handbag valued at 15/11. Black pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment with bard labour by Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M. Sub-Inspector Packer said that Black went Into a store and took a handbag when he thought no-one was looking and made for the door. He had, however, been noticed by a shop assistant. She went after Black and stopped him. Black offered to pay for the bag, but when the attendant went back behind the counter Black made a break. He rushed out the door and bounded on to the street where he was struck by a motor-car tte was miurecf and taken to hospital Black was not represented by counsel, but from the dock he said that he had not known what he was doing. The woman’s handbag would have been no good to him.
