Girl Guide Notes

fcit. Paulcommittee are holding a childrens’ plain and fancy dress party next Saturday, July 2, in the schoolroom, Broadway. An invitation is extended to all companies to come along and enjoy themselves, from 2 p.m. A small charge of Cd is being made. Prizes for various costumes. St. Paul’s Company A change was made in our usual programme last meeting as the Rata, Kowhai and Clematis patrols held their effort in an endeavour to raise funds for the Sir Truby King Memorial Fund. The sweet stall proved most popular and the concert staged by the Kowhai and Clematis patrols was amazing in the variety of talent which appears in the company. The audience thoroughly enjoyed the performance. Great excitement was caused by the “Mystery Packets” which Mrs Tiddv kindly gave to the company to assist them in their effort. The Guides who purchased them were the centre of an admiring group who keenly watched to see what the packets revealed, and all were delighted with their purchases —Thank you, Mrs Tiddy. Guides, don’t forget to tell all your frieends to come along to the fancy dress party to be held next Saturday, July 2. A good time is assured also arizes. HOKOWHITU BROWNIES Good day my Brownies! I hope you are busy shining vonr badges ready for the afternoon. What do you think! Brown Owl has had an extra special brain-wave: it is that we finish up our meeting oach Saturday with a picnic tea. There is a lovely large open fireplace in our hall, so each week two Brownies will light a fire and boil the kettle. Won’t that be fun! Also good practice for your First Class test, so don’t forget to bring a cup and some eats this afternoon. Perhaps Mother ■will spare you an odd cup, then it could bo kept in onr cupboard for the rest of the winter, instead of bringing ono along each week. A big, happy smile until this afternoon. Tu-whit. Tu-whoo! TENDERFOOT TEST Teaching the test is the work of the Patrol Leader so she needs to be very sure on her own points before she can hope to teach anyone else. The great attraction is often the tying of knots, so let your teaching be as practical as possible. Can you tie a bowline round your waist with only one hand! If you can’t, practise it or get someone to show you how. Then teach yonr Tenderfoot, too, and see if you can really pull on it and have it stand your weight. A fisherman’s knot is used for tying wet ropes, so make your ropes wet and show how they will not pull apart, whereas the other knots will work loose if they are wet. And tie them with two actual ropes and not with the two ends of one rope. That is not practical knotting. Can you tie up a parcel so that it cax be played with all the evening and still stay intact? Or if you saw a loop attached to a post or bar, could you tie a sheetbend to it as quickly as you can tie a reef knot? A clovehitch can be tied in at least two ways, one witl loops and one with the one end. Can you do them both This is the practical test of knotting. Make up games in your Patrol Corner time and see who can come up cn top in your patrol. Such a game as making a cage for Jumbo the elephant is great fun. First Class You will be very interested in the early history of the Guido Movement. You are not asked to learn all the dates but you are expected to have a rough idea of the relative length of time of the various activities. Here is a brief history which you can cut out and pasts into your notebook:— It was over 26 years ago that a smak body of girls calling themselves “Scouts,” paraded for inspection a. the Boy Scout, Crystal Palace Radiy, wearing a uniform designed to imitate as nearly as possible that of their brothers the Scouts. We can say that the Guides were “founded” by the Chief Scout, but, as a matter of fact, they “founded” themselves, and their growth and appearance in that year—l9o9—was as apparently &b the growth and appearance of a mushroom in the night. They just insisted on being Scouts and that was all there was about it.

As a matter of fact, the Boy Scout headquarters were in rather a fix over this unlooked-for addition to their Tanks; but they hated to damp enthusiasm, and a somewhat nonplussed secretary did his best to cope with questions (to which there were no real answers) and also further the requests for recognition.

After some consideration the word “Guide” was substituted for “Glri Scout.” It was hoped that this name would prove an inspiration to the girls, as it was takon from the title of that Indian regiment whose loyalty and courage, resourco and reliability has made it renowned throughout the Empire. Although the new name was not at first received with any great enthusiasm by those would-be-boys, here and there,

Glen Oroua. Dear Hub, —I am sending a piece of poetry callei “Winter. 0 I am nine and in Std. 2. There arc four in our class. lam glad we live across the road from school these winter days. We have two teachers at this school. Mayflower. Your little poem is very sweet, Mayflower and as you see it has found a wee corner in the Page.
