Te Ante Match

PAST PACED FROM WHISTLE TO WHISTLE Te Auto College,, having won tho Moascar Cup m 1936 and defended it successfully in 1937, defeated the Palmerston North Boys’ High School first fifteen on Saturday afternoon for tho third successive occasion, by 10 points to six. Fourteen games havo been played between these two schools, eight of which have been won by Te Aute, seven by High School and one drawn. Te Aute won by 11 points to 6 in 1937 and 14 to nil in 1936. The teams were equal in regard to weight. Te Aute had twelve of la3t years players and High School eight. The match fulfilled its promise of being the best yet staged, in that the Te Aute rearguard played with delig~..ul abandon and the pace was on from whistle to whistle. Wycherley was the most aggressive of the High. School backs, if on occas-

ions a little too selfish with the ball. He was quick on attack and made several good runs. Ryan showed a good turn of speed and Campbell showed up most amongst the forwards. Downes and Whaanga both applied their boot to good effect, the former succeeding with. long well-directed punts and the latter converting both (Te Aute tries. In a team that was i brilliant in every department, Mataira, [Smith, Taite, Whaanga, and Kainamu I were resourceful on attack and faultless on defence. When a Te Aute attack I broke down the team did not wait for a counter, but immediately started a fresh movement, each player co-ordinat-ing to perfection. I The teams lined out as follow: — Te Aute College First Fifteen I Backs: A. Rota, C. Taite, T. ■ Whaanga, R. Smith, L. Kainamu, W. [Mataira, K. Kaanga. | Forwards: R. Eparaima (captain), | M. Karaka, W. Haimona, R. Strickland, N. Tou, G. Marsden, M. Anderson, J. Waititi. Emergencies: D. Halbert, J. Patterson. Palmerston North High School First Fifteen Backs: A. Mason, W. Wilson, M. Wycherley (captain), D. Ryan, T. Downes, D. Dunealf, A. Churchill. Forwards; A. Campbell, C. Andrews, L, Chapman, L. Whibley, K. Smith, R. Armstrong, J. Nash, D. Snelling. Emergencies: R. Langley, EL Mullin, T. Moresby, J. Eyles. The Game Soon after the kick-off Downes took n penalty kick for High School, at about 35 yards out and, although an excellent kick, it passed outside the posts. From the twenty-five lino Te Aute sent the ball out on the full and a scrum resulted. The ball shot out to Mataira, who failed to take the pass and Te Aute were momentarily held up in their twenty-five. High School won the ball from the scrum but their backs had difficulty in getting the ball out, and were forced back into their twenty-live. School forwards took the ball to half way where Downes sent away a long kick, but Smith cleared for the line. Wilson fielded the ball and kicked, but Rota cleared and a line-out was formed 20 yards from the corner. Wycherley shook off two tacklers and sent on to Ryan, who was grassed. Te Aute gained possession and Mataira sent on to Whaanga, who made yards of ground before sending the ball back to Mataira who was collared near the line. A penalty kiek saved School from a dangerous position. The Te Aute attack had been a brilliant piece of headwork. Wycherley was collared hard in possession, but sent on to Wilson, who lost the ball. Rangi Smith picked up and looked like getting there but two or three School forwards dived and pushed him over the corner flag. When a player broke too fast round the scrum a penalty was awarded Te Aute. It was a beautiful kick by Whaanga, from forty yards out, but failed to raise the flags. Practically the whole Te Aute fifteen handled in a passing movement before Taite was held up by the sideline. Downes and Dunealf kicked through and a race to the line ensured, but Smith was there first. It was a thrilling moment. Heavy rucking took place on the line and it looked as if High School might score. They were awarded a penalty for an infringement and Downes with a certain kick scored tho first three points. The next few minutes saw football at an extremely fast pace. The leather went right along the Te Aute lino to Smith, who was brought down, regained his feet, and was then bottled up. Te Aute worked their way up the sideline near the small stand. Kainamu jabbed his way through and passed to Mataira who threaded his way through the opposition with a tricky swerving run and scored under the posts. Whaanga converted and To Aute led by five points to three. From a scrum Kaanga exploited the dive pass and Mataira kicked. Mason fielded a difficult ball at full speed and kicked to the line. Ryan took play across field and with a line kick sent the ball rolling out near the corner. High School won the ball from the lineout, but Te Auto collared their man every time and never allowed a chance to get going. School forwards took the leather at their feet to the Te Aute twenty-five, but Taite had little trouble in kicking to safety. School won the ball from a scrum but Dunealf fumbled. An infringement resulted in a penalty kick against Te Aute, but Downes’ attempt passed just underneath. Offside play gave To Aute a penalty in their own twenty-five. From a scrum Whaanga received the leather and took it right to the High School lino before he was grassed, but again a penalty kick saved High School. Light rain fell for a few minutes. Downes booted the leather sixty yards and from a scrum Wycherley gained possession and dummied his way past past two men before he was halted. Te Aute counter-attacked, but when a man held onto the ball after being collared, a penalty kick sent High School within yards of scoring, and the whistle was sounded for halftime. The Second Spell Te Ante worked their way down to the corner, and from a ruck the ball shot out to Smith, but it was too high for him to take and he played it out behind the flag with his foot. From the twenty-five Campbell followed up the kick and took the ball; some distance at his feet. Wycherley beat two men, but he had no chance of : getting away. He picked up and sent on to Ryan, whom Taite tackled in no uncertain manner. Smith threw off several attempts at tackling and reverse passed, resulting ill the sally goiug within yards of scor* ing, and a scrum ensured. Kaanga dummied past one man, cut out the next, but the third got him. Play went across field and Whaanga’s transfer to Taito went over the sideline. Eparaima tried to bunt off a would-bo tackier and in doing so broke his collarbone. Shortly afterwards Karaka was also injured and had to leave the field, so the two emergencies, Halbert and Patterson, went into the game. Campbell featured in a solo dribbling rush and shortly afterwards Wycherley went away on his own in a great dash be >ro transferring the leather to Wilson, -who trained oulv a few vards

before he was forced out near the corner. Play went smartly across field and Ryan completed a long passing movement with a well-earned score in tin corner. Downes' kick failed and High ( School led by one point. School were attacking hard when j Downes attempted a field goal. It wm a nippy effort, but did not succeed. 1 Kainamu intercepted Downes’ pas | to Dunealf and turned the attack, lead , ing To Aute Weep into School territory, j Heavy rucking saved School momentar ily, but Te Aute sent the leather to th other side of tho field and Taite picke< ( and, slashing through to score, lef. School standing. Whaanga con verted with a good kick and the scor® was Te Aute 10, High School 6. School attacked hard with a few minutes to play, but failed to make any impression on the Te Aute defence. Mr C. Eglinton controlled the game.
