Championships and Special Prizes
COMPETITIONS SOCIETY’S 1938 FESTIVAL AWARDS The championships and special prizes awarded for the various sections of the 1938 festival a‘t the demonstration con cert of the Manawatu Competitions Society on Saturday evening were as follow: Champion lady vocalist: Miss Peggy Phillips (Palmerston North), 16 points; runner-up, Miss Isabelle Graham (Woodville), 14 points. Champion gentleman vocalist, Mr. John Bonifant (Wellington), 21 points; runner-up, Mr. C. W. Shirriffs (Palmerston North), 19 points. Champion lady elocutionist: Miss Daphne Violich (Wellington), 21 points; runner-up, Miss Vivian Violich (Wellington), 13 points. Champion gentleman elocutionist: Mr. Douglas Carlyle (Dannevirke), 14 points; runner-up: Mr. Donald Davies (Napier), 13 points. Champion girl elocutionist: Valerie McCombe (Hastings), 11 points; runnerup, Joan Lynch (Palmerston North), 5 points. Champion boy elocutionist: Beresford Pegden (Palmerston North), 8 points; runner-up, Russell Jackson (Bunny thorpe), 5 points. Dancing champion: Marjorie Joan Clements (Wellington), 20 points; run-ner-up, Isa McKenzie (Palmerston North), 11 points. National dancing champion: Patricia Over (Palmerston North), 14 points; runner-up, Joan Peters (Wanganui), 13 points. Miss Gwen Gibbs’ cup for dancing: Miss Lorna McAffer (Palmerston North), 14 points; runner-up, Miss Joan Peters (Wanganui), 11 points. The Ida Matthews’ Memorial Cup, for the most promising dancer under 12. (Donated by Mrs. Matthews, of Wanganui, in memory of her late daughter, who had an outstanding record of successes in dancing competitions): Erin O’Rourke (Pahiatua).
