At last evening’s opening of the Palmerston North Business Girls 5 Club’s new clubroom, a telegram conveying best wishes and congratulations was received from Mrs. D. Evans, Palmerston North, who has been a keen worker for the club for a considerable time.
Intimation that Cabinet has approved of the plans and the expehditure for the erection of a new chief post office building in WangAuui has DeOn received by Mr. J. B. Cotterill, M.P. for Wanganui. The architect, Mr. R. G. Talboys, ol Wanganui, has been instructed "to proceed with the calling of tenders for the work, and it is expected that this Will be dotio at an early date.
To burn rubbish on his-farm at Opiki, James Thomas Hay lit a lire about 11 feet from the boundaiy adjacent a State forest reserve. Unfortunately a small boy became terrified at the smoke and flames and while Hay was attending to him the fire spread into tall fescue and then into the reserve where over two acres of trees were partially destroyed. In the Palmerston North Magistrate’s Court yesterday Hay was prosecuted, it being explained that it Was an offence to light fires within 20 chains of a boundary of a State forest. The Act also provided for a maximum penalty of 3 months’ gaol or a £SO fine. Defendant said he was quite ignorant of the 20 chains gap required. Mr. J. L. Stout imposed a fine of £3 with 15s costs.
