Women’s Institutes

TE ARAKURA The May meeting of the Te Arakura Women’s Institute took the form of members’ day. Mr 3. F. M. Bradley presided over a good attendance of members and visitors. After some discussion it was decided to enter in the handcraft section at the forthcoming Winter Show. Articles are to be brought to the next institute meeting when a selection will be made by Mrs. A. Griffith. Mrs. H. M. Whisker gave an interesting report of the annual meeting of the J North Wellington Federation. Members were interested in a paper on goitre by I Miss Hazel Johnston, of Massey College, read by Mrs. A. Griffith. A programme for a social afternoon was contributed to by Misses Dorothy Parker and Audrey Candy (vocal duet), Miss Ruth MeDowall (Irish jig), Miss D. Parker (song), Mrs. J. Fitzgerald (song), Miss R. MeDowall (tap dance), Miss Audrey Candy (song), Mrs. J. H. Bennett (humorous reading). Accompaniments were played by Mesdames A. Clifford and D. T. Johnston. The programme competition, judged by Mrs. Griffith, resulted in a win for Mrs. E. H. Haythorne. Tho flower competition winners were Mrs. R. It. Tait (chrysanthemum), Mrs. J. B. Young (berries), Mrs. F. M. Bradley (marigold). The senior competition for a machine-made cushion was won by Mrs. G. Sanne, Mrs. W. Ansin 2, Mrs. D. Lcwcr 3. Junior (best bedroom novelty): Miss Joan Burnham 1, Miss Joyce Bennett 2. The hostesses

who dispensed afternoon tea were: Mesdames 1). Griffith, H. M. Whisker, R. R. Tait and A. Clifford. A letter from Mr. Haythorne signifying his willingness to judge the flower competition was received. Mrs. E. H. Haythorne’s programme has been adopted and will bo put into print immediately. The competitions for June will be: Senior, puff pastry; junior, woollen dog or pincushion, and the flowers are violets.
