Fines and Penalties

MAGISTRATE’S COURT PROCEEDINGS Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., presided at the sitting of the Magistrate’s Court in Palmerston North yesterday. A youth whose name was suppressed, 18 years of age, admitted the theft of 7s 6d in money from A. C. Hughes. According to the police accused entered the rooms of fellow boarders. He was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within six months if called upon. Accused had made restitution, it was explained. Arthur Victor Jones, showman, aged 36, admitted the theft of a suitcase containing clothing valued at £3, the property of Graham Scott, at Greymouth on January 24. According to tho police, accused had left his own suitcase at a left luggage office and was given Graham’s in mistake when he went to collect. Some of the contents were sold and others thrown into tho Buller river. Accused had a long list of previous convictions, mostly involving dishonesty. “You have not taken advantage of the chances you have been given,” commented his Worship when imposing a term of two months’ gaol with hard labJames Buglass and W. D. Campbell who drove cars over railway crossings in front of approaching trains, were each fined £2 with 10s and 12s costs respectively. Riding bicycles at night without lights cost A. R. Fowles, B. P. Gleeson and J. F. Trcntice 10s fines with 10s costs. W. E. Harfield who had no warrant ot‘ fitness for his motor-cycle, was fined £1 with 10s costs. M. J. Baker, charged with driving without due care and attention, was fined £2 with 24s costs. D. J. Lucas appeared on a charge of speoding over the Rangitikei line-Bunnythorpe-Kairanga road crossing, and was fined £2 with 10s costs. His speed was said to be 50 m.p.h. Watson Bros., who employed two assistants after noon on the weekly statutory half-holiday, were fined £2 with 10s costs.
