Security for Fanners
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—l noticed in Mr. Savage s speech on Wednesday night he mentioned the security farmers now had under the guaranteed prices. I would like to ask where the security comes in, when it is practically impossible to get labonr for dairy-farms at all? What is the good of the price without the labour to realise it? On this farm we have only had labour for 10J weeks since September 30, 1937. Of that, nine weeks was indifferent and one and a* half weeks was bad labour. And all the nearby farms are in the same fix. In one case a child of ten years has to help night and morning in the cowshed. What will dairy farming for those without labour of their own be shortly? It will be impossible. Mr. .Savage said the Government did not want to induce men to leave the farms, but who has induced them to? Will the reduction of dairy farming on a large scale be another step onward that we hear so much about?—l am, etc., FARMER. Pahiatua, April 26, 1938.
