NEW A. & P. PRESIDENT OUTLINES POLICY. “It is my wish, to build on tho foundation already laid so that when another twelve months has gone by we may be able to measure up a substantial addition to a progressive policy,” declared the Manawatu A. and P. Association’s new president, Mr A. Burgess, when presiding over his first meeting of the general committee yesterday.
“It is customary for a president at his first meeting after election to give an outline of the policy and plans lie proposes to pursue during the coming year. Our past president, Mr Russell not only outlined a very optimistic programme twelve months ago but saw it very successfully carried out,” Mr Burgess added. “Some of the ideas expressed by Mr Russell in his report to the recent annual meeting should find favour ift. the light of recent experience. I refer in particular to the proposed setting up of a small board to relieve the finance and general committee meetings of unnecessary detail and to investigate important matters before they are brought before the committees. It was my intention to suggest something of this nature myself to be tried out this year. I shall give my assistance to the proposal and I hope it will find favour with the committee.
“My chief objectives this year will be as follows: —
“(1) To raise enough money to complete the re-roofing of the grandstand; (a) by running an old-time ball; (b) by running a queen carnival; (c) by a special drive for donations of stock or cash; (d) by seizing any opportunity that may present itself throughout the year. I am in favour of conducting another grandstand gymkhana if some outstanding attraction becomes available.
“(2) To increase‘the membership by a further three to four hundred and bring tho receipts for this form of revenue up to £2OOO. “(3) To further popularise our buildings and grounds for hiring for dances, sport, etc. “Our growth in the past few years has opened my eyes as to what we may expect in the near future if wo make the most of our opportunities. Wc must plan for the future aud always have the future in mind when we contemplate alterations to our buildings. Our shows must grow in size and importance but the rate of development will be greatly influenced by the way we tackle the job of popularising them. Let us endeavour to set the pace for other associations to follow. It is no doubt wise to copy the good points we see in other shows but let us go beyond that and endeavour to lead the way.” ,
PINE WEATHER SOLDIER. ‘ 1 What do you mean by being away ten days after being granted only seven days’ leave'?’ ; asked the C.O. “It said on my leave paper seven cljear days, and three of them were foggy,’’ replied the recruit.
