Pahiatua Borough

COUNCIL MEETS The monthly meeting of the Pahiatua Borough Council was held on Monday evening, there being present Crs. S. K. Siddells, W. A. Carthew, G. H. Hodd, S. Judd, T. W. Watts, J. W. Sturton, J. E. Murphy, W. T. Brown and D. Moriarty. Correspondence. The P. and T. Department stated that the existing public telephone box, if anything, resulted in a loss to the Department and further expenditure could not be justified. The Chief Postmaster at Palmerston North said the keeping of ledgers in the Pahiatua Post Office Savings Bank was receiving attention. Cr. Carthew stated that was quite hopeful. The Public Works Department wrote advising that the present arrangement is that the council pay one quarter share of the cost of the work marked blue on the map, estimated to cost £690.

Cr. Hodd moved that the council pay the proportion of the cost of the work. —Carried.

Tho State Advances Corp. of New Zealand advised that it was willing to take up the Cemetery loan of £SSO.

Cr. Brown moved that the council agree to accept the offer. —Carried. The Bush Basketball Association applied for the use of the municipal tenni.3 court from May 1. —Granted, the fee to be the same as last year, £2. The Post and Telegraph Department applied for permission to erect a kerbside direction sign in the main street opposite the Post Office building.— Granted.

Application for consent of the council to the proposed alterations and restoration of King’s Theatre, Pahiatua, was received.

Cr. Carthew asked if the application could be turned down seeing that there was so much dissatisfaction in the town.

The Mayor stated as long as the bylaws were complied with the theatre people could do their alterations.

Cr. Siddells told the council that Mr. Mason, the general manager of N.Z. Theatres, Ltd., who is at present in Melbourne, had put through a ’phone call from Australia saying that, providing the N.Z. Theatres were not to carry any more liability on the present building they were willing to complete the negotiations. In the meantime the speaker advised that it would be better if the matter be left until Mr. Mason returned to Wellington. It was reported to the council that a house for Mr. V. E. Lett had been started without plans for same being placed before the inspector. The Mayor said it was getting past a joke and pointed out that the only way to deal with it was to prosecute.

The clerk stated that the builder doing the work had been written to asking that permits be sought before going ahead with any building work. Mr. C. A. Woodfield’s complaint about the condition of Huia street and his suggestion for putting in a drain to connect with the gutters in Crewe street was referred to the works committee with power to act.
