TWO-STOREY BUILDING DESTROYED From Our Own Correspondent. TAKAFAU, Last Night. Only the otienuous efforts of tn* Takapau Volunteer Fire Brigade working with buckets saved the Takapau Post Office when fire completely gutted a two-storey wooden building beside it just before midnight yesterday. Damage amounting to £I7OC was done in the fire, which completely destroyed the building and its contents. A passer-by saw flames emitting from the upper floor of the building, and sounded the church bell. The occupiers of the building, which contained a bakery, a double shop, tearooms, and dwelling quarters, were Mr. and Mrs R. S. Askew, and their two daughters, who were asleep in the house and were first awakened by the alarm. Fortunately there was no wind, and the brigade, working a bucket chain with water drawn from a nearby well, concentrated on saving the Post Office next door, also a wooden building. In this respect their efforts were successful, but all that was saved from the burning building was a small quantity of fuel.
The building was the property of Mr. John Hobson, of Hatuma. Both the building and contents were covered by insurance.
