“Impressions of Palmerston North "
To the Editor. Sir, —During my peregrinations is New Zealand, I may state that 1 am impressed with Alanawatu and what appears to be splendid arable and grazing laud. Of course, a railway carriage window is not a good place from which to studv the topography of the country. Passing through Wairarapa, I noticed hundreds of ucres of stumps,
memorials to the fallen veterans of an indigenous forest. In many places there are small forests of exotic trees. I am much impressed with the broad acres of Manawatu. The beautiful city of Palmerston North should not be missed byvisitors to New Zealand. 1 wish to commend the civil administrators upon their wonderful achievements. It must be obvious to the studious observer that the geographical position of the city is second to none in New Zealand. The railway thrugh your city is an impediment to i>rogress. Of course, the
people of Palmerston North are aware of this. I understand that a suitable deviation will be made and a modern station erected adjacent to the city. I am impressed with the architecture of the city. The new six-storey building of the T. and G. Alutual Life Society is a credit to the city, also other modern buildings too numerous to mention. The spacious streets, Broadway and others, and the beautiful Square, are paragons of beauty. I understand that Palmerston North is the geographical and population centre of New Zealand—within a radius of 40 miles of the city there are 90,0(»0 people; within a radius of 50 miles 150,000 people. This should be sufficient to stimulate the apathetic and others to greater progress. In conclusion, I wish to felicitate the people of Palmerston North upoD thm beautiful city and surroundings—l am, etc., W. V. WJLbON,
