Air and Airs J. Waldegrave have returned to the King Country after a holiday visit to Palmerston North. Mr. Hamilton Dickson, of Welling, ton, has been appointed adjudicator for all the musical sections at the Napier Competitions.

Guests of the King and Queen at Windsor during the week-end included the Prime Alinister and Mrs. Chamberlain and the United States Ambassador and Mrs. Kennedy.—Official Wireless. The famous Russian singer Fedor Chaliapin is in a critical condition with heart trouble (says a Paris cable.) Specialists have been summoned to attend him.

Mr. A. 81.B 1 . Piddington, a well-known Sydney King’s Counsel, aged 7(5 years, was knocked down by a motor-cycle in the city on Alonday. His condition is regarded as serious, says a cablegram.

Dr, R. S. Wallace, vice-chancellor of the University of Sydney, who has been on a holiday visit to New Zealand, left Auckland by the Awatea on his return to Sydnej r . Sir Robert Turing, nf Chichester, England, arrived at Auckland by the Empire Star to spend a fortnight in visiting the scenic resorts of the Dominion. He will leave shortly for Rotorua.

Air. J. Thorn, M.P., for Thames, who has been apopinted to represent the Government at the International Labour Conference at Geneva, left Auckland by the Awatea for Sydney on his way to Europe.

Tribute to the efforts of Air. Fred Cousins in producing so successfully the ATanawatu Repertory Society’s recent staging of “The Queen’s Husband,” was paid when members of the society gathered to make him a presentation. This took the form of two handsome volumes.

Air. and Airs. D. D. Twigg and Air. Jack Ford are this week motoring through from the Bay of Plenty for the Feilding races and will be the guests of Airs. W. I. Baker, Derby street. After Easter Mrs. Twigg will stay for a while with her sister, Airs. W. A. Bailey, “Kaingara,” Ivimbolton road.

Cabled advice has been received by Air. AI. H. Oram, Jr., ALA., of Palmerston North, that he has been successful in passing the preliminary examination for the Institute of Actuaries held in New Zealand last January. Air. Oram leaves for England in July to further his studies.

As a result of a postal ballot among members of the Alid-Canterbury branches of the National Party, Mr. Al. E. Lyons, Christchurch, secretary of the Canterbury Agricult, al and Pastoral Association, has been selected as the Nationalist candidate for the seat at the General Election. His name has been forwarded to the National Party headquarters for approval.

The Alinister of Defence (Hon. F. Jones) announced yesterday that Air. R. C. Kean, Chief Inspector of Aircraft, would proceed to England for attachment to the Department of Civil Aviation at the Air Alinistry and -would later spend a short time in the United States. Air. Kean would be relieved by a senior officer from the Air Alinistry.

Reference to the passing, on Saturday, of Air. David Bell, was made at the weekly meeting of the Palmerston North Rotary Club, of which the !a:e geutleman was a member. The president (Air. A. A. Langley) said the late Air. Bell had been an extremely active member of the club and always willing to assist in any way. On the president’s motion it was decided that the club’s sympathy be expressed to the late gentlemen’s relatives.

One of the best-known of the former masters of King’s College and loved by generations of boys, Air. John Edward Fagan, died at Auckland yesterday at the age of (59. Air. Fagan graduated at Trinity College, Dublin. After leaving the university lie led an adventurous life and lived on the Continent, in Canada and Australia. Coming to Auckland in 190(5, he joined the staff of King’s College and taught there until the college was moved in 1922 to its present site at Otahuhu. He remained at King’s School, Reinuera, until his retirement about three years later.—Press Association.

Air. K. Hatch, who has been a member of the Y.AI.C.A. Club for somp time, removed to Wellington a fortnight ago and it is anticipated that he will be making his future home there. As a member of the Alanawatu Hawke Cup side he took part in the match in which Aianawatu gained the cup from Taranaki and also in the game in which it was lost to South Auckland. He played in Hawke Cup games each season, although he was not a member or every Hawke Cup team. A brother, Mr. R. Hatch, who is now in Alelbourne, represented Manawatu and later Wellington on the cricket field.

Tribute to the public service rendered by the late Air F. J. Nathan was paid at the monthly meeting yesterday of the Kairanga County Council, and a resolution of sympathy with the widow and family was carried in the usual manner. The late Air Nathan was a member of the old Alanawratu Koad Board, and on it being dissolved and merged in the Kairanga County Council, eh was elected as a member for the Taonui riding. He served one term, not seeking re-election in 1905. Sympathy with Cr. F. J. Russell in the passing of his brother, Air P. H. S. Russell, of Palmerston North, was voiced by the Kairanga County Council yesterday.
