Schuschnigg’s Fall
LONDON, April 5. Why did Dr. von Schuschnigg resort to the plebiscite which led to his downfall? The Alanchester Guardian’s former Vienna correspondent, as a matter of historical interest, answers: Because Dr. von Schuschnigg knew what the idea behind Dr. Inquart’s mission was that he should slowly prepare a plebiscite which, if cleverly manipulated and backed up by the necessary pressure, would yield a majority for Nazi Germany. Dr. von Schuschnigg, to forestal this, decided to hold a plebiscite while a free vote of independent Austria was still possible. But he counted without Hitler.
A Vienna message reports that Cardinal Innitzer, who recently wrote a letter to Herr Buerckel supporting the plebiscite for union between Austria and Germany, has left for Rome following a summons from the Vatican.
A Rome message states that Cardinal Innitzer interviewed Cardinal Pacelli, and is expected to have an audience with the Pope to-morrow. Officials of the Holy See emphasised that Cardinal Innitzer was not formally summoned to Rome, but a voluntary visit would afford a welcome opportunity to discuss the position of Austrian clergy generally.
