Six Months’ Gaol For Theft of Cheque
MAN WITH A RECORD. Jack Harry Payne who appeared before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., in tbe Palmerston North Magistrate's Court yesterday charged with stealing at Waipukurau a cheque for £7, the property of F. S. Wells, was unable to convinco his Worship that he should be given a chance to make good and will suffer a penalty of six months’ gaol with hard labour. According to Detective-Sergeant Meikiejohn, Payne, who is 31 years of age, was cycling to work at Waipawa when he entered a camp whare and took the cheque from a pocket in Wells* clothing. He then cashed it and with some of the money bought clothes for a woman and two children and paid their train fares to Palmerston North. Accused had a fuiriy bad criminal history and had been released on probationary license on December 15. He was still on license. Accused asked bis Worship for a chance to make good, a thing which had been denied him in the past. The Magistrate: You have been convicted and discharged before for theft. Isn’t that a chancel Your list contains car conversion and 23 charges of breaking and entering houses for which you got 5 years. On the present charge you go to gaol for six months.
