Waterside Worker Killed

RUN OVER BY RAKE OF TRUCKS Per Press Association. WESTPORT, Last Night. William Ernest Bird, aged 43, a married man with a wife and two sons, waterside worker employed by the Railway Department, lost his life at 4.50 p.m. to-day when breaking down a rake of trucks of coal for the loading of the Kalingo. He uncoupled three trucks and intended to hold those following, but either slipped or his foot was caught in the points and he was run over, his leg being severed from the hip. Death was apparently instantaneous. Deceased was a native of Tamworth, Staffordshire, and had been 15 years in New Zealand and was prominent in local Labour circles, being a Labour nominee for the coming Borough Council elections.
