Hitler Denounces Austrian “ Terrorism ”

THOUSANDS ALLEGED TO HAVE BEEN SHOT United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph. —Copyright Received Sunday, 8.15 p.m. MUNICH, April 2. Addressing 30,000 gathered in halls and 400,000 who were forced to assemble on the surrounding hillsides, Herr Hitler denounced the so-called terrorism which previously existed in Austria. He asserted that it resulted in thousands being shot and hundreds of thousands being imprisoned. He again accused Dr. Schuschnigg of inciting other countries against Germany whereupon his immediate hearers interrupted the broadcast, shouting *‘Shoot him.” A Berlin message says Britain has sent a Note to Germany recognising the union with Austria, agreeing to replace the legation at Vienna by a consulate-general and reserving the right to define her attitude regarding treaties and other matters concerning Austria since the cessation of independence. France has decided to install a consulate at Vienna. At Herr Buerekl's orders the Nazis amid cheers set fire to the concentration camp at Woolersdorf where hundreds of Nazis had been imprisoned since the revolt in 1934. HITLER DENIES NAZI ACTIVITIES ABROAD SOUTH AFRICAN FEARS LONDON, April 1. The Times Munich correspouuen says that Herr Hitler, in aii election speech at Frankfort, said: "We are accused of carrying on Nationalist Socialistic propaganda in other countries. That is not true. National Socialism is such a dear, holy German cause that I teel inclined to pray that God may keep it primarily for the German people and let other nations foster their own ideals." Meanwhile, a Johannesburg report tells of a sinister revival of Nazi activity in the mandated territory of South-West Africa during recent weeks. This activity was described to the r Prime Minister by members of a SouthWest African delegation who were in Capetown recently to plead for the admission of the territory as a fifth proI vmce of the Union.

In subsequent conversation with the political correspondent of the Rand Daily Mail, members of the deputation quoted some remarkable evidence of the extent of Nazi activity in SouthWest Africa to-day.

"For a time,” said one of them, “the Union Government’s declaration on the future of the territory, together with the subsequent proclamation against the political activities of aliens, had a sobering effect on the more extreme eit ments in the German population, but recently they have been encouraged by irresponsible propaganda to redouble their efforts, and South-West Africa today is a veritable hive of underground Nazi activity.” According to his informant, this ac ticity has: % Completely poisoned the social relationships between the Union section and the older German population, convinced a very large section of Germans that the return of South-West Africa to Germany is imminent and inevitable, and destroyed the prospect of any real cooperation between the two races. "The position in South-West Africa to-day,” said this member, "is that the whole territory is organised into cells. In the towns there is a cell for practically every street, and these cells, each with its cell commander, are responsible to the district cell, which u. turn is under the control of the central Nazi organisation for the territory, operating under the direct auspices of Nazi headquarters in Germany.” GERMAN AMBASSADOR APPOINTMENT TO LONDON BERLIN, April 1. Dr. Herbert von Dircksen, ambassador at Tokio, will be the new German Ambassador in London, MARCH TO AUSTRIA WHY HITLER DECIDED LONDON, April 1. The Stuttgart correspondent of the Daily Telegraph says that Herr Hitler, in a speech, declared that he had decided to mobilise two days before the actual moblisation for the march into Austria, as he received proof that Dr. Schuschnigg was preparing to betray his Berchtesgaden pledges. This proof was contained iu a private communication from Dr. Schuschnigg to an Austrian late provincial Governor, in which he stated that he had decided to yield to Herr Hitler’s demands only in order to gain time until opinion abroad could be mobilised in Dr. Schuschnigg's lav*
